@mattyglesias Adjust for family wealth and legacy/donor admit status and geography and get back to us. Gym teachers in the northeast make $100-120K after 15 yrs in the northeast. Making $150K in OK or rural TX or ND coming from nothing means a whole lot more.

This is a subset of the affordability debate but I think there are a fair number of youngish Americans with $200-250k household incomes who feel like that should afford a nicer lifestyle than it actually can in top 10 metros (in part because retirees still have the good houses).

@mattyglesias Fine to tinker with zoning but do we need to throw it out the window? I think DC is a special place to live for its mix of apartments, townhouses, and single family homes, but it doesn’t mean you should plop a six story apartment building between two single family homes.

If Republicans aggressively gerrymander the South and eliminate up to 10 Democratic seats under a narrowed VRA, Democrats could respond in blue states. For example, this 52-0 California map could become legal, flipping four seats from 🔴 to 🔵.

The Supreme Court just struck down Louisiana’s majority-Black congressional district 6-3, gutting a key section of the Voting Rights Act.
That law used to let courts force states to draw districts where Black and minority voters had real power. No more.
States across the South can now redraw maps. Fewer minority-friendly districts means fewer safe Democrat seats.
One nonprofit report estimated that overhauling the Voting Rights Act this way could swing approximately 12 Democratic-held House seats to Republicans.
Republicans hold a slim House majority heading into the 2026 midterms. This ruling just made keeping it a lot easier.

Scoop: Kid Rock flew to Fort Belvoir this morning on his private jet and took a little joy ride on 2 Apache helicopters with War Secretary Pete Hegseth, according to multiple Army sources, and backed up by flight data.
Apaches typically have 2 pilots, but they went up with one so the boys could each ride shotgun, I'm told.
Apache helicopters are not stationed at Ft. Belvoir so unclear where they came from. A spokesperson at the base referred questions to the secretary's office.
