Listening to the news. Most things being discussed won't happen. But the one that most definitely won't happen is "tunnels between Shetland islands open in 8 years." Not a chance.

WTF. This policy helps absolutely no-one. @ChefTomKerridge should be ashamed of himself for promoting Labours “propaganda” - encouraging young people to go on to benefits to get a job is just stupid. Had it been targeted for Retail and Hospitality - that might have been clever, but really this is just a really stupid policy and we should not be promoting it. No help is help unless it’s a a VAT CUT is what is needed nothing else is “help” #hospitality #HospitalityVoices
Department for Work and Pensions@DWPgovuk

"It’s an amazing scheme and I’m fully behind it" Tom Kerridge spoke to Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden to discuss changes to the Youth Guarantee - including a foundation apprenticeship for the hospitality industry ow.ly/sT5050YuEnA

A positive step to address youth unemployment - over 100,000 job opportunities have been lost in hospitality alone over the last year. Traditionally our sector provides 38% of all first jobs and 54% of jobs for 16-24 year olds
BBC Breakfast@BBCBreakfast

Companies are to be paid grants to hire more young people under new government proposals to tackle youth unemployment. Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden told #BBCBreakfast ministers want to create 200,000 jobs and are pledging £1bn in funding for several initiatives bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

@MerrynSW The interview fills me with zero confidence that this Minister knows what she is doing, or even speaking about. Clearly out of her depth trying to defend yet another back door tax.

This is a shocker. We are doing a pod on it today. We always said the student loan system was a graduate tax system. And here it is.. you get to pay more for your loan than is remotely reasonable... because NHS.
BBC Newsnight@BBCNewsnight

"So it's alright to change the terms of their loan unilaterally without consultation without pre-warning?" @vicderbyshire challenges Schools Minister Georgia Gould over the government's approach to student loan repayments. #Newsnight

Campaign launched by local hospitality businesses and backed by @wonky_table . #NoLabourMPs is the latest step in our #TaxedOut campaign. Talking has got us nowhere. We have been ignored while costs keep rising. It is time for industrial action. We cannot afford to close. We cannot afford to strike. We cannot afford to down tools and march on London. So we will do the one thing that gets MPs attention. We stop serving them until they start serving us. Even on day one the reaction has been fierce. MPs and hospitality businesses are already clashing. Good. They need to feel the pressure. Maybe now they will finally get the message. #CutVat

The UK could lose up to 9000 pubs. From April, pubs with a rateable value of £100,000, will see business rates jump by £19,000 per year. They will need to sell an additional: 60,000 pints a year. Thats 1200 pints a week. Thats 170 extra pints a day. Thats before rising energy bills, wages and other costs.

@Sacha_Lord And job losses for under 25s may exacerbate mental health issues and push this group onto the benefit system, just when the govt say they want to take a big portion of young people off welfare.

@MartinSLewis How does raising NLW by 10% not mean another rise in inflation? All SMEs, across all sectors, will have no choice but to raise prices dramatically to keep up not just with wages but also knock-on price increases from their suppliers who also have to raise to keep up.

@OliviaUtley I was just thinking about how my parents never travelled when they were young, and perhaps one reason is they simply couldn't afford to with the level of debt and interest.

We also became completely inured to taking on massive debt when we borrowed £40k plus for uni. And on top of that we’ve seen our parents do extraordinarily well in the housing market by taking on masses of debt

One terrifying thing I’m learning as interest rates rise is there’s a whole generation (me inc) who don’t understand debt at all. People under 30 have not only grown up with very cheap money (I was 15 when interest rates went down to 1% and they didn’t rise again til I was 28)

@UKHospKate Most small family shops fall under the threshold to pay rates, online sales tax has no direct bearing on a shop's bottom line. It's really not difficult, put someone with actual small business experience in shadow minister role or as advisors @labour

And businesses having to put up their prices in Feb / March to prepare for huge hike in Living Wage. Who would have thought inflation would jump again, specifically in the hospitality sector?!
UKHospitality@UKHofficial

The @ONS statistics made public this morning demonstrate a strong link between the unexpected increase in #inflation and inflated pricing in the hospitality industry, where food and drink costs for businesses have risen by 24%.

Huge challenge coming in April when support falls away - business insolvency uptick in hospitality and inflation spike will follow. Govt and OFGEM need to work to encourage suppliers to allow contract renegotiation to reduce bills or postpone the end of current support by 3 mnths

That was a truly remarkable resignation statement by Nicola Sturgeon. Whether or not you back her ideas and convictions, she has been one of the most important politicians of this generation. Her call for less irrationality and hysteria in politics should be heeded

The fact the UK was the fastest growing economy in the G7 last year - as well as avoiding recession - shows our economy is more resilient than many feared. we are not out the woods yet. It’s a tough time for many. We need to stick to our plan to halve inflation this year.

So that’s now British Gas, SSE and EDF who have all had to admit to failing to pass on the Energy support to 10,000’s small businesses. @ofgem “we know there’s more to be done” This is scandalous and needs urgent Govt intervention. thetimes.co.uk/article/b60b58…
