@THR Yeah, everybody knows characters in Homeric epics are supposed to have British accents. Nolan has really lost it.

@flodyssey Thank you. I appreciate it. I assume the scene is a parallel to Ajax the Lesser violating Cassandra and the temple of Athena. But Athena at some point is angry at Odysseus as well. I’m just speculating how Nolan might be adapting the material.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited #SOUTHCOM today and met with Gen. Francis L. Donovan. Their discussions focused on U.S. efforts to counter threats that undermine security, stability and democracy in our hemisphere. The Secretary attended the 2026 Chiefs of Mission Conference at SOUTHCOM, which convened senior U.S. government leaders to discuss advancing National Security Strategy objectives in our region. @SecRubio @StateDept @WHAAsstSecty @USAenEspanol @USAemPortugues @DeptofWar

I was just joking when I suggested Nolan could have used the Pope translation and had Telemachus say: “No more my sire will glad these longing eyes …” but apparently you’re not. Obviously Nolan wasn’t interested in making “the classics” and giving it the “proper gravitas register.” But if he had done it that way, I don’t believe for a second you wouldn’t be mocking him and engagement-farming over that.

Homeric Greek sounded archaic to the Greeks of Socrates’s day. It had gravitas. The English of Shakespeare and the King James Bible produces the same feeling in us today. Which is why something approaching that is the proper register for classics. Not “you’re pining for a daddy.”
Fandom Pulse@fandompulse

Epic Fantasy writer Christopher Paolini reacts to the line "you're pining for a daddy" in The Odyssey Trailer: "Why does the use of 'dad' stand out so much? One of the things I liked about Lynch's Dune is the style and delivery of the dialogue. It *felt* epic." Is this therapy dialogue a movie killer?

Mind you, this is the level of discourse and understanding of nearly everyone on X “defending” the integrity of Homer and Western Civilization itself from the alleged desecration of Nolan.
ADONIS@adonispara

The entire point of helen is that her beauty was so extreme that two civilizations went to war over her face. that's the plot. Nolan race swapped the most famous beauty standard in western literature with whatever this is. directly contradicting the plot basically.

@VDAREJamesK @zuki_2024 Then give my account a follow. But—and here’s a contrarian opinion—I’m waiting till I actually see the film before I pronounce it genius. It will be hard to surpass Eggers’s epic comedy THE NORTHMAN, a personal favor of yours, I believe, though.

🇦🇺 I grew up respecting Anzac Day and the Anzacs with all my heart. Several family members served, including myself, and that respect is unwavering. Booing a Welcome to Country is not disrespecting the fallen. What is wrong and un-Australian is forcing it into Anzac Day services. Anzac Day is sacred — a day of unity, mateship, and remembrance for all who served and fell for one Australia. The Anzacs fought for a shared nation, not division. Inserting Welcome to Country ceremonies, with their frequent emphasis on “stolen land” and separate ownership, shifts the focus from collective sacrifice to grievance and identity politics. It tells non-Indigenous Australians they are perpetual guests in their own country, even while honouring those who defended it. This politicises a solemn day that should rise above such things. True Australian spirit is about equality and loyalty to the nation as a whole — not compelled rituals that divide us. I stand with Jacob Hersant.
The Noticer@NoticerNews

Nationalist activist Jacob Hersant speaks to the media outside court where he and three others are being prosecuted for allegedly booing during the "welcome to country" at an Anzac Day Dawn Service last year. "No one should be jailed for expressing their political views"

No, you weren’t wrong—Nolan actually is extremely smart, wise, and Odyssean. It was a “true opinion” you held, as philosophers say, but you didn’t “know” it (“have justified belief” that such was the case), because most (particularly, former) Nolan fanboys are themselves idiots.

@romanhelmetguy “And why is everything so grey?” It looks to be foggy, and fog often has that effect—I thought such an erudite person as yourself might know this. @grok tell the man why fog makes things look grey.

Criticizing dialog in movie trailers for lacking subtext, now, are we, Helmet Head? Let me explain how subtext works, genius (because from your explications of people like Homer, Xenophon, and Plato, it’s clear you’re not great at grasping it). Subtext requires a full text, which is lacking in a 3 minute trailer. Let me fix this for you: “[The trailer’s] written to be watched while looking at your phone.” This is a trailer for a half-billion-dollar-budget movie aimed at a broad audience in 2026. Of course “it’s written to be watched while looking at your phone.” I do like some of your stuff on property taxes.

@KnightHighland 💯 There's literally zero subtext in a single line here. Every character just says exactly what they're thinking, while also restating what's going on in the plot. It's written to be watched while looking at your phone.

@romanhelmetguy No, pre-credit. They may reduce the number to one. Now you’re criticizing Nolan for not revealing all in a trailer! Is there no stick too small to use to beat—and engagement-farm off of—Nolan?

💯 The fact that Nolan doesn’t have the actors speak Ionian Greek (with Aeolic elements) in dactylic hexameter and use subtitles (a la THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST) is pretty telling, and a real missed opportunity. After all, the integrity of Western Civilization is on the line. At the least, Nolan could have used the Pope translation and had Telemachus say: “No more my sire will glad these longing eyes …” Nolan, you hack.

“The most frightful example of this kind is offered by Russia, where he [the Jew] killed or starved about thirty million people with positively fanatical savagery, in part amid inhuman tortures, in order to give a gang of Jewish journalists and stock exchange bandits domination over a great people.” You didn’t happen to be in that Discord room with Tyler Robinson, did you?
