Robert Reid's Biological Emergences: Evolution by Natural Experiment is a remarkable, undercited book. It stands with Susan Oyama's Ontogeny of Information and Mary Jane West-Eberhard's Developmental Plasticity and Evolution as a foundation of post-Darwinist evolutionary theory.

As we are in the postgenomic era, teaching mendelian genetics in schools is over-simplistic and misleading. It is time to teach students the biology of our times and give them a sense of the complexities of development.

Going back to teaching about genetics via development. If you want to read a single, eye-opening book about this topic, it should be The Dependent Gene by David Moore. It is 20 years old now, but still very, very relevant and useful:

Let's study history, and teach it to students along with the biology of our times. I have always wondered: Why don't we teach "Development" as a topic, in schools? Developmental processes are as important as evolutionary processes for understanding life.

Mendelian genetics is one of the curriculum topics that clearly shows that we have forgotten what science education is about. Students learn to solve problems with crosses that teachers can assess easily, but we do not realize that in this way we maintain the misleading idea ...
