Residents of Magale Sub-county, Namisindwa District, welcomed us by peacefully blocking the road outside St. John’s College Magale, demanding answers over the continued collection of school fees at this government-supported institution.
The school receives over UGX 360 million annually from the Government of Uganda to support management, administrative costs, and staff wages. Despite this support, the school has been charging UGX 210,000 per term for day scholars and UGX 540,000 per term for boarding students, contrary to the President’s directive that government schools should not charge tuition fees.
During our visit, the headmaster and several key administrators were nowhere to be found.
Following consultations with local leaders, parents, and other stakeholders, we resolved that day scholars should not be charged school fees. Boarding students may only be required to pay a reasonable amount to cover meals and other legitimate boarding-related expenses.
Let us uphold the Government’s policy of free education, protect parents from unlawful charges, and ensure every child has access to quality education regardless of their family’s financial circumstances.
