So what do people think happens from here? Local elections are a Labour wipeout. Does Starmer remain PM? If not, who replaces him? And what happens from there? Genuinely interested to hear what people think. Feels like a really important moment for the nation.

According to Natural England's modelling, the fish disco will save just 0.083 salmon and 0.028 sea trout per year. That works out to over £280,000 per fish saved. For £700 million, we could wipe out Somerset’s £41 million council deficit for a decade, fix every single pothole in the county, build a rail link to Minehead, and make every bus in Somerset free for years. Or we could just make the electricity that Hinkley produces cheaper, and we'd all benefit. Being a poor country is a choice.

@cmonmun @rcolvile The politicians didn't want to make those decisions, as they have a negative impact on their electoral chances, so they handed it over to the quangos and courts, so they can go "it wasn't me guv".

@rcolvile Perhaps we should have some sort of system where we vote for people and those politicians actually make decisions rather than everything being decided via quangos and the courts.

This is the point I keep making. Natural England are legally mandated to only care about the fish, not Putin, power cuts, bankrupt businesses etc. We have eliminated any concept of ‘trade-offs’, at vast expense.

@Social_Farmers @PintSizedFarmer Used to bike up from Seascale back then, to go fishing in the Calder / Ehen - in the estuary where the rivers merged - used to get some nice salmon and sea trout.

In today’s highbrow farm news, Mavis the farm collie has rolled in pig slurry and is now operating as a mobile biohazard. The smell is so appalling it makes your eyes water. I took her out to air off. She rolled in sheep poo. We met a couple of walkers and heard a very posh “Oh, I say!” as Mavis thundered past. We went to look for wildlife. Everything downwind knew we were coming before we even stepped in the woods. Mavis then found some fox poo. She's had a full hosepipe bath and still smells like a health and safety violation. The dreaded Fairy Liquid may be the only way forward.

My sympathies. Xmas 2025 became the fox poo Christmas here but that didn't beat the time years ago when we took our Falkland terrier (Gsd x Airedale) for a day on the beach at Sellafield, she ran ahead to something and started eating it, it was a rotting seal carcase. We had to travel back in a small car.

These brave officers did a great job. In fact, I’d argue they showed restraint. Unless you want to have a go at stopping a marauding knife attacker, keep your criticism to yourself.

Our brave officers confronted a man they believed to be a terrorist, who refused to show his hands, who was violent, and who continued to pose a clear threat. Using only their training, courage and tasers, they detained him while he continued to try to attack and stab them. This took true courage.
