@NationMffl Two games, two heavy defeats this season. First game -40. There’s no reason to believe that even a healthy Luka in rhythm could lead the Lakers to a win in a best of 7 against OKC.

@susie_dent I like the German "verschlimmbessern", which means to make things worse despite the intention of improving. Perhaps in english it would be "disimprove".

I am happy to share a review I recently wrote on the design of peptide binders. It gives an overview of experimentally validated tools and discusses the challenges of why peptide design is more difficult than the design of classical protein binders. chimia.ch/chimia/article…

COOPER FLAGG NAMED KIA NBA ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: A rookie race to remember ended with Cooper Flagg joining special company – again. The Mavs forward and No. 1 overall pick was named the 2025-26 Kia NBA Rookie of the Year on Monday after a debut season that matched hype with production, and then some. Flagg’s all-around game shined in Year 1, leading all rookies in scoring (21 PPG), while ranking 2nd in assists (4.5) and steals (1.2), 4th in rebounds (6.7) and fifth in blocks (0.9) per game across 70 outings. At 19 years and 112 days old (as of April 12, the final day of the regular season), Flagg is the second-youngest Kia NBA Rookie of the Year winner behind only LeBron James (19y, 106d) – adding more history to a record season. Do It All: Flagg finished the year as Dallas’ leader in total points (1,473), rebounds (466), assists (316) and steals (84). Rare Air: Only one other rookie has led his team in all four categories since steals were first tracked in 1973-74: Michael Jordan. 50-Point Flash: On April 3, Flagg poured in 51 points against the Magic, becoming the youngest player in NBA history to record a 50-ball. Bona Fide Buckets: He’s also the first rookie since Allen Iverson (1996-97) to post four 40-pieces. Photo Finish: Flagg edged out his former Duke teammate, Charlotte’s Kon Knueppel, by 26 points for 1st place, marking the second-smallest top-2 margin under the current Kia ROY voting format (since 2002-03). Philly’s VJ Edgecombe finished 3rd, rounding out a standout group of finalists.

@MFollowill Nice summary Mark! I think it should be Coop because he was the most consistent rookie when looking at all stats and not only a subset but it is good to see that multiple rookies showed amazing performances this year. The league is in good hands ☺️

For decades, biology textbooks have enshrined a simple rule: DNA is made by copying a template. After one enzyme unzips a DNA double helix into separate strands, another called a polymerase builds a complementary sequence, base by base, for each strand. Presto: two copies of the original DNA. But new research into how bacteria defend themselves from viruses now shows this synthesis rule isn’t absolute. Now, a team describes a bacterial enzyme that synthesizes DNA without a nucleic acid template, using its own structure as a guide. Learn more: scim.ag/4tN5TBR

A shorter post on the John Hollinger Game Score that I wrote a great deal about yesterday. Looks like Cooper Flagg will finish with the 10th best Game Score avg since 1983-84 among qualifying rookies…this @Stathead search shows he’s in incredible company.

I really dig the John Hollinger developed Game Score. IMHO it's a good metric to try and measure individual game productivity. It weights the accumulation of counting stats (including negative events like fouls and turnovers) and shooting efficiency as well. You can find each players average game score for a season by looking at their game logs on Basketball Reference. Gm Sc of 10 is avg. 40 is extraordinary (Coop had 2 40+ game scores this season and rookies have only had 11 40+ game scores dating back to availability of the metric in 77-78). The top guys in the league this season for example had avg game scores of Jokic (28.8), Shai and Luka (both 26.4), Wemby (22.4). 18 rookies played 1300+ mins this year (that's essentially the NBA's threshold for awards eligibility (65 gms and 20 mins a game) so that seems like a good sample size). Average game score this season of those 18 rookies: Flagg (16.4), Knueppel (14.0), Edgecombe (12.7), Coward (10.8), Reynaud (10.7), Queen (10.2), D. Harper (9.7), Fears (9.6), Bailey (9.2), Kalkbrenner (8.8), Demin (7.7), Riley (7.4), Tre Johnson (7.3), Clayton (6.1), Clifford (5.9), Will Richard (5.7), Sanders (5.0), Sion James (4.7). Coop's 16.4 avg Game Score is very very impressive when compared to recent RoYs (better than 9 of the last 10) - Castle (10.3), Wemby (18.4), Banchero (13.6), Barnes (13.1), Lamelo (13.0), Morant (13.9), Luka (15.8), Simmons (15.8), Brogdon (8.8), and KAT (15.4). And just because I was curious about a few more - LeBron (14.5), KD (12.5), Tim Duncan, first team all-NBA as a rookie (17.5).
