New study: most climate models underestimate the decline of the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC. The AMOC is on course to slow by more than 50% by the end of the century. Very likely the AMOC will then be past the tipping point for full shutdown. 😨 us.cnn.com/2026/04/16/cli…

Fiona Hill interview in Die Zeit. “We are in the midst of this catastrophe. When I said in 2022 that we were already experiencing World War III, I didn't mean a war with fixed blocs, like we experienced in World War II. Today, the world is interconnected through multinational corporations, global interests, and security guarantees. We are a world at war. This changes everything: security, the economy, alliances, technology, climate. All these problems have been swept under the rug for a long time. Now they are out in the open, and we can begin to fix them. The public must take responsibility.”

In the early 1930s the SA was roughing people up, creating chaos in neighborhoods, seeking to terrorize with the occasional killing. By the late 1930s it had been supplanted by the SS, which was much better trained.
Bill Kristol@BillKristol

Also, may I say that I don’t agree with people saying ICE and CBP need “more training.” They’re doing exactly what this administration has trained them to—impose a reign of fear in blue cities. They don’t need more training. They need to be ripped up root and branch.

Collapse of key Atlantic current could bring extreme drought to Europe for centuries, study finds. That's an under-appreciated impact of an #AMOC shutdown, of particular concern given the recent results showing much higher likelihood of this. 1/2 livescience.com/planet-earth/r…

Ultra Processed Food, and the system that produces it, has overtaken tobacco in terms of health and economic harms, and is also the leading cause of plastic pollution, loss of biodiversity and deforestation, and the second leading cause of emissions. The silence is deafening. Civilian men, women, and children are being slaughtered in Sudan. Estimates of over 150,000 killed & 14 million displaced since April 2023. Considered the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. No mass protests. No daily political statements/demands. No college campus encampments.

Then there is this: Cars now number over a billion globally, and weigh far more than ALL MAMMAL LIFE ON EARTH. I don’t like it, but cars are what we have now instead of bison, elephants, rhinos, whales, or wombats — our 4-wheeled mega-fauna running roughshod over the planet. This fabulous but depressing Nature paper documents all life on earth. From it, I can compare the weight of all cars versus the weight of all animals. public.flourish.studio/visualisation/… pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

According to our estimates, in the 1850s, the combined biomass of wild mammals was ≈200 Mt (million tonnes), roughly equal to that of humanity and its domesticated mammals at that time. Since then, human and domesticated mammal populations have grown rapidly, reaching their current combined biomass of ≈1100 Mt. During the same period, the total biomass of wild mammals decreased by more than 2-fold. We estimate that, despite a moderate increase in the recent decades, the global biomass of wild marine mammals has declined by ≈70% since the 1850s. nature.com/articles/s4146…
