After 26 years we closed our baby saver in Berea. On 23 September 2025 we reopened the baby saver at our baby house in Glenvista. We thought it would take a while before a baby is safely relinquished here. On 28 September 2025 a new born baby girl was safely relinquished in our saver. On 29 September we learnt that GDSD managed to sneak in (and gazetted) a proposed amendment to the Children's Act, this despite our objections to the same thing a couple of months ago. The proposed amendment states that the use of a baby box is considered abandonment which is a criminal offense. The public has an opportunity to oppose the amendment by 25 October. 3500 babies are abandoned unsafely in SA and for every baby found alive, 2 are found dead. A baby saver is a safe alternative to unsafe baby abandonment and is used in many countries across the globe.
