His brother was detained for over a week, subjected to interrogation and physical beatings, while his elderly father, Sonam Tsewang, suffered chronic anxiety and passed away on 29 September 2022, never having learned his son's fate. Yeshi's case reflects a broader pattern of rights violations in Karze Prefecture, where the CCP has conducted a systematic campaign of cultural erasure, including mandating in 2024 that all primary and middle schools terminate Tibetan language instruction while conducting opaque judicial proceedings with little transparency and no due process.
