So by this logic is it the case that when crops catch fire it’s because of the ‘farming agenda’, when houses in France were burned it was because of the ‘building agenda’, or the ‘timber agenda’ when plantations go up? Can’t be anything to do with the heat & dryness exacerbated by climate change & the careless behaviour of people.
Bernie@Artemisfornow

Ahhh … climate ideology by pen pushers has just burned 371 acres of land, in the name of “rewilding” So er … Not climate change! The RSPB is fully aligned with the UN’s Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 13 and SDG 15 Such Dickheads (technical term)

Restricting disposable BBQs during extreme fire risk is wise. But ignition prevention is only part of the answer: also need to restrict access where necessary, while land managers must be allowed to reduce the fuel loads that turn an accidental spark into a major wildfire.
Ray Georgeson MBE - Borders Liberal Democrats 🔶@BordersRayLD

It’s now time for disposable BBQs to be withdrawn from sale on advice from fire officers who should be given emergency powers in fire risk conditions. Fair play to Co-op for their voluntary withdrawal today - others should follow suit.

@MariaMCasey It is exasperating. Whatever happened to common sense? Rising summer temperatures/heat intensity & dryness/drought demand new approaches to combat fire risk - this must include restrictions on sales of things like disposable BBQs & fireworks during fire risk periods.

@BordersRayLD Yes and we’re surrounded by idiots setting of multiple fireworks tonight, beggars belief 😡 They should be arrested and locked up to till we’re out of drought.

Major fire last week in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh. Lots of flora & fauna destroyed. This week, people have been sitting on the grass next to the devastation with portable barbecues, stamping out the grass when it became alight. What’s wrong with people?

@BordersRayLD Australia just gave for authorities the ability to ban open fires, but also to remind folk that things like welding and parking your car on dry grass can cause fires. As can discarded metal objects. Cigarettes much less so now. This is the level of education needed.

@meldrum_suzanne yes also an issue I agree. If folk weren’t so irresponsible with their fire hazards (BBQs, ciggies, glass bottles etc) we wouldn’t need to talk about bans or restrictions. This issue will only rise as a concern, as summers become more intense in heat & dryness.

@BordersRayLD Help me out here. Is there any credible evidence that any of the recent fires were started by one?

@LucyGoBag Curious that attitudes are 'ban them from sale' rather than deal with those who misuse them. So many things are made illegal as collateral damage from the core problem.

wishing all my Yorkshire friends - and my two Yorkshire-born sons, a Happy #YorkshireDay - the family banter will continue as I remind them that Yorkshire is the 3rd loveliest county, after Lancashire 🌹& Berwickshire 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 😂🤣😂

13 minutes it rained like this and it was pure bliss 🌧️♥️ Look at how yellow the grass is, it is crying out for water. We keep hoping for more of this wonderful rain, but not too much that we get the opposite problem! #farming

Very pleased to attend the celebration of the life of Michael Meadowcroft, MP for Leeds West, 1983 - 1987 & a lifelong champion of liberalism, democracy & community politics. Michael was the first MP I met, at the Knowsley North By-election. He inspired so many people. 🔶👏

We need to shift power into the hands of local communities. That has to mean actually listening to people and giving them a real say – not imposing a one-size-fits-all answer. Lib Dems have long made the case for devolving powers to grow the UK's nations, regions and communities.

Exactly. If the govt was serious about NEETs they would employ more driving examiners. They could even set the fee to make a £10 profit per test and cut taxes for employers who employ young people! Win-Win!
Ray Georgeson MBE - Borders Liberal Democrats 🔶@BordersRayLD

Tim is right - driving test scarcity is a huge issue especially in our rural areas and is a drag on economic growth when young folk simply can’t take jobs because public transport is poor & they’re waiting ages for driving tests.

I feel hopeful about the talks today on fixing our broken care system but this is just the beginning. A solution is desperately needed. I will always stand up for family carers through this process.

Last night I looked at the availability of driving tests at the 100 nearest test centres in the next six months. Number of centres with an test available? Not one. Our country is failing!

Caring has been central to my life, and the lives of millions across the country. I'll be meeting the Prime Minister today to discuss how we can finally find a solution to the care crisis. We need to do things differently. I really hope we are on a journey to fix this.
