@zacbowden I'm afraid that bringing the users trust back would require much more than that. A good start would be a public pledge to user's privacy with real steps in that direction. Like banning adds in Windows overnight. Zero data collection by default, etc. Then prove it.

BREAKING: Microsoft just announced several major changes to Windows 11 in an effort to win back user trust and evolve the platform into something people will actually want to use over macOS and Linux! It's a huge announcement that addresses Windows 11's biggest problems today, tackling core fundamental issues such as unreliable system performance, UX consistency, AI bloat and general enshittification. Microsoft has confirmed that this year, it WILL be reducing where ads and Copilot appear throughout the system, including in Start, Widgets, Notepad, Photos, and more! File Explorer and Windows Search will be upgraded with improved performance and capabilities that make finding apps and files much faster and easier. The OS will become lighter with less RAM and system utilization at idle, making it smoother to run on low end hardware with limited memory. These improvements will also benefit high-end PCs too. Windows Update will be improved with more granular controls and the ability to postpone updates for longer, along with reducing how often the OS needs to restart to install an update. Microsoft has also confirmed that it's bringing back fan favourite features such as the ability to move the Taskbar! It's also working to update more areas of the system shell with modern WinUI designs, which should make Windows 11 feel more coherent and complete. There's much more in the announcement, and it honestly all sounds too good to be true. Microsoft really is listening to feedback, and is eager to make Windows the BEST desktop OS on the market. More details including when these changes will arrive in the link! windowscentral.com/microsoft/wind…

Seriously, you don’t hate the @nytimes enough. A synagogue with a preschool is targeted. The NYT reminds readers it was “dedicated to the formation of a Jewish state.” The journalistic equivalent of: “well… what was she wearing?”

The @nytimes just can’t help itself. The lengths it will go to humanize an ISIS-inspired terrorist who built a bomb packed with nails meant to rip through a crowd. This is the man who raised his hand in an ISIS gesture and smirked as police led him away in cuffs. Disgusting.

@elonmusk @elonmusk > No other company can yet do this. I'm asking you as a humanist you are. Should any company do this at all? At least till we as a society know how to deal with the implications of this technology.

Macrohard or Digital Optimus is a joint xAI-Tesla project, coming as part of Tesla’s investment agreement with xAI. Grok is the master conductor/navigator with deep understanding of the world to direct digital Optimus, which is processing and actioning the past 5 secs of real-time computer screen video and keyboard/mouse actions. Grok is like a much more advanced and sophisticated version of turn-by-turn navigation software. You can think of it as Digital Optimus AI being System 1 (instinctive part of the mind) and Grok being System 2. (thinking part of the mind). This will run very competitively on the super low cost Tesla AI4 ($650) paired with relatively frugal use of the much more expensive xAI Nvidia hardware. And it will be the only real-time smart AI system. This is a big deal. In principle, it is capable of emulating the function of entire companies. That is why the program is called MACROHARD, a funny reference to Microsoft. No other company can yet do this.

I was banned from European Parliament for this speech in 2016. Just listen and ask why this simple demand was too radical for Europe, and how many women were killed for it. Happy International Women’s Day 💔

I kept avoiding NotebookLM - couldn't get value out of it. This post finally showed me why. "The difference between a semester and 48 hours isn't the amount of content. It's knowing which questions to ask."
Ihtesham Ali@ihtesham2005

I accidentally discovered how to compress a semester of learning into 48 hours. A grad student at MIT showed me his NotebookLM setup. I thought he was just organized. Then I watched him pass a qualifying exam on a subject he'd never studied before. Here's exactly what he did: First: he didn't upload a textbook. He uploaded 6 textbooks, 15 research papers, and every lecture transcript he could find on the subject. Then he asked NotebookLM one question: "What are the 5 core mental models that every expert in this field shares?" Not "summarize this." Not "explain this topic." Mental models. The stuff that takes professors years to develop. But the next part is what broke my brain. He followed up with: "Now show me the 3 places where experts in this field fundamentally disagree, and what each side's strongest argument is." In 20 minutes he had a map of the entire intellectual landscape of the field: the debates, the consensus, the open questions. Most students spend a full semester just figuring out what those debates even are. Then he did something I've never seen before. He asked: "Generate 10 questions that would expose whether someone deeply understands this subject versus someone who just memorized facts." He spent the next 6 hours answering those questions using the source material. Every wrong answer triggered a follow-up: "Explain why this is wrong and what I'm missing." By hour 48, he could hold a conversation with his thesis advisor without getting destroyed. The tool didn't change. The questions did. Most people treat NotebookLM like a fancy highlighter. These students are using it like a private tutor who has read everything ever written on the subject. The difference between a semester and 48 hours isn't the amount of content. It's knowing which questions to ask.

Yes. While their models are extremely performant, in my subjective view, Anthropic has the least reliable service. Claude Desktop for example, feels like an early beta product.
Gergely Orosz@GergelyOrosz

On one end, the Anthropic team is a massive user of AI to write code (80%+ of all code deployed is written by Claude Code). They ship amazingly fast. On the other hand, seeing these beyond terrible reliability numbers suggests there might be a downside to all this speed:

Today, I am proud to be Israeli. Despite all the shaming. Despite all the UN "resolutions". Despite all the academics. Despite all the online pressure. Israel is cleaning the Middle East from radical religious terrorists. One by one. They will not thank us for it. But someone had to do the job.
