They both synthesise archeological discoveries with the renaissance tradition, verging on the manneristic. I get what you mean though it has an air of the earlier greek revival, you squint and it's a Smirke building

@BornInArcady @Charless45S @lucberthaud the interesting thing for me is the lower right building-- using the greek revival architecture in a much later classical manner with the layered pilasters. not something you typically see.

@tectonic_ideal Me too, and I see chaste and unaffected architecture of late classicism as the ancestor of modernist building- both requiring extremely refined handling of proportions, materials and detailing to make appealing

You can understand the wilfully strange, colourful, complicated, qualities of Victorian gothic architecture by looking at the rote, arid classicism of the generation immediately preceding it. Here a project by B.D. Wyatt and one by his student Roumieu- a radical change in values
