I’m delighted to share that I will be starting my lab @univmiami in Spring 2025! We will study cellular and developmental biology in non-bilaterian animals – cnidarians, ctenophores, placozoans, and sponges – to explore early animal evolution.

Spotted: A glowing gelatinous jelly ✨ This tiny jelly, Botrynema brucei, is primarily found in the midwaters of the Arctic Ocean between depths of 900 and 2,600 meters (2,900 to 6,500 feet). They grow to a length of only three centimeters (about an inch).

In response to this unoriginal tweet, I’ll go first: Never trust your first results, especially when they agree with what you expected. Skepticism is the price we pay for amazing science.

@chorye @Archaeon_Alex Thanks for saying this. Aside from gaining insights through your own work, conferring with colleagues is the essence of scholarship. Books, journals, recorded lectures, and especially twitter are nice but not the same.

@Archaeon_Alex Many many industries use conferences for professional networking, building presentation skills, forming collabs, team-building, crash courses, and just general fun. Why should trainees in science be denied these opportunities just because their industry is taxpayer funded?

tired of reading academics justifying in person conf as vacations from their families and hang out with friends. It's the sad reality of how we failed in our work-life balance. crazy how much of the taxpayer money is spent on fancy hotels and time away from kids.

@DocEdge85 I never had the album but I recalled the line immediately from hearing in on 101.5 KGB so much in my teens. I'm imagining Isabel had never heard it and you're playing it at the kitchen table to explain your weird behavior. :-)

Now that 6yo gets report cards, my wife has to deal with me saying "Have you seen junior's grades?" in the cadence David Lee Roth uses at approximately 1:51 in "And The Cradle Will Rock" 3x/year, forever

@kiahhardcastle When I was an editor we did make use of the lists of suggested reviewers (excluding coauthors) as well as known authors/reviewers and Google. Some effort was made to cover different aspects of a paper (technical/conceptual) across the reviewers, if there were multiple fields.

Random q… does anyone know how editors choose reviewers? Is there a big in-house list of scientists associated with certain keywords? Do they keep track of reviewing history (or review quality, timeliness, etc)? Or do editors magically know everyone and everything about them??

Today marks 6 years since I moved to San Francisco to join the @BarabanLab to develop #zebrafish as a model of genetic #epilepsy. Im excited to share much of that work through our latest publication. This is just the first step towards new therapies.
BarabanLab@BarabanLab

Our most recent #zebrafish work to model human #epilepsy gene mutations. Many authors to thank for shepherding this monumental multi-year lab-wide effort to completion. Especially this talented trio: @AlieshaGrif @Coca_876 @JingLiuPhD 1/2 nature.com/articles/s4200…

I post tacos to gain new followers, but then sneak in a bunch of tweets about transit and affordable homes. (Or is it the other way around...?)
