I was all set to watch the new “Amadeus” miniseries, until I did my homework: British-Japanese actor Will Sharpe cast as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, an 18th-century white Austrian composer. Black and mixed-race actors playing nobles, librettists, composers like Lorenzo Da Ponte and Franz Xaver Süssmayr in a multicultural 1780s Vienna that never existed. Constanze Mozart is no longer the “silly supportive wife” of older versions, but is given a massively expanded, MODERNIZED role. She's "fiercely independent," shrewd, sexually autonomous, contentious in the marriage, and refuses to be sidelined. She actively explores her sexuality, including infidelity with one of Mozart’s pupils. The frank, explicit sex scenes emphasize her AGENCY and enjoyment. And, they changed the framing device to show an aged Salieri confessing to an older Constanze (not a priest), positioning her as guardian of Mozart’s legacy and a central figure in the story.
