This story is for those liberals, esp the White female liberals, Ding Ling (丁玲, 1904–1986) began as a feminist writer, gaining fame with her 1927 debut Miss Sophia’s Diary, a story of a woman’s struggles in a patriarchal society. She later embraced communism, joined the CCP, and after 1949 rose to prominence as head of the Chinese Writers’ Association and editor of major Party literary journals. When she asked the “wrong” questions, the Party turned on her. In 1957 she was branded a “Rightist”—stripped of her posts, and sent to a remote labor camp for “re-education,” where she endured nearly two decades of exile and hardship. Lesson? Communist revolutions always eat their own—and those who justify and cheer on political violence believing they are on the “right side of history” should remember her fate.
