@BRamseyKSR Do you really think Freeman was good enough to be one of our stars though? If he was one of our 2 best players, we would’ve turned out like Syracuse.

Two points I want to make based on some responses I’ve gotten + other comments online. 1) Missing on Donnie Freeman does not mean Kentucky should have taken Sebastian Rancik. I will defend them on that. He wasn’t moving the needle enough. That would have been a panic/bird in the hand play. “Rolling the dice” with Freeman, even now after missing on him, was worth it in my opinion. 2) Comments about “complaining about overpaying last year and now complaining about not overpaying this year” make me laugh. Not even SORT OF the same thing. The issue last year was Kentucky overpaid for depth and role players. I’m ALL FOR “overpaying” for STARS. Dudes who raise your ceiling. Maybe the evaluation on who those guys are is wrong, but that’s a different conversation. “Overpay” for your top three guys. Find “value” elsewhere.

@abigbluecat @BRamseyKSR You have to be kidding. Florida does this every year with retention and so do many other schools. Having a coach kids want to play for is the most important thing in CBB right now besides maybe NIL and we don’t seem to have that. I still believe in Pope tho.

@AlbertH50850310 @BRamseyKSR Well there is also just a human aspect. These kids are not machines. They have friends, family and sometimes just might wanna live in a certain area. They are millionaires. Maybe Condon bought a nice house over there and doesn’t wanna go through the process of selling it..

A few clarifying thoughts on the Donnie Freeman situation that I think many people are missing or looking at the wrong way... 1) This isn't REALLY about Donnie Freeman...it is about a guy that Coach Pope and the staff CLEARLY identified and wanted. At Kentucky you are expected to close on guys you WANT more often than not. 2) This isn't REALLY about the money...nobody is "WORTH" the money they are getting. However, you have to overpay for guys you really want sometimes. You have to be willing to overpay for the guys that you think move the needle. Your evaluation might be wrong, but that is a different issue. SPEND ON STARS. If you think Donnie Freeman can be one of your three best players (I think he can be too) then, at Kentucky, the price should be somewhat irrelevant. 3) If Kentucky misses on Freeman it DOES NOT MEAN they should have taken Rancik. I'll defend that to the grave. Taking the "bird in the hand" is how we got to where we were the last two seasons. I'm ready to swing for the fences and willing to fall flat if they whiff. Again, the evaluation of Freeman can be wrong, but if that is the guy you wanted then I'm ALL FOR letting Rancik walk even if it means risking not getting either. 4) The portal giveth and the portal taketh away. Things can change in an INSTANT due to $$$. We've seen the winds change in this recruitment before...it can happen again. Also, even if Freeman commits elsewhere and it gets RIGHTFULLY critiqued from Kentucky's side, things could end up working out even for the better because that is just how things happen. You can be critical in the short term while still waiting to judge the end result. 5) None of us know what the conversations are like inside of the closing room so it is very hard and even somewhat unfair to sit here and cast stones. However, from the outside looking in, I really think that you have to find a way to get the money and give him what it takes to sign on the dotted line TODAY.

-motor concerns -injury concerns -headache circle -ambiguous size -expensive (not a great value) -pretty average floor spacing ability at best -ball handling a bit suspect -iso-heavy Freeman is not worth more than 2.5m tbh. I would have taken Rancik or other options.

@Catgonewild1 @BRamseyKSR Ik the Kentucky insiders are spinning this but if a player wants to sign, they can sign. If players only want to play here when we severely overpay them that’s a problem.

@abigbluecat @BRamseyKSR Then why is Alex Condon’s agent not pushing him to leave? We can’t make the agent excuse every time. Rob Wright had the same offer to play here and said no. Same with many others I bet.

Indispensable, highly touted player: *commits to Kentucky in the offseason* Jeff Goodman: “Mmm yeah good player but ehhhh I’m not sure about the fit with [insert other good player that already committed]. Both of them [have useful skill].” Why do we let him do this every year?

@BRamseyKSR I wish I was this optimistic but Cadeau’s two best traits were, and still are, his passing and defense. I’m not worried that much about diallo as a scorer, it’s everything else. Also, we don’t have near the supporting cast or coach around him that Michigan does.

I don't want to set too lofty of expectations for Zoom Diallo, but this trajectory made too much sense not to share... Elliot Cadeau: 10-53 (18.9%) as a freshman, 29-86 (33.7%) as a sophomore, 65-173 (37.6%) as a junior Diallo has a better track record as a mid-range/FT shooter
