Taiwan doesn't need to match China's military. It needs to make an invasion so bloody and chaotic that Beijing never tries. Drones are how it does that. New @WarOnTheRocks piece with @molkathcam on why Hellscape should be Taiwan's operational concept — not America's. warontherocks.com/2026/03/hellsc…

"By framing their work as service, the elites shaping defense policy are able to do just that: claim moral participation in the burdens of war while remaining insulated from its consequences...". @WarOnTheRocks on the Dangers of Vibe Patriotism: warontherocks.com/2026/03/the-da…

I wake up every morning and thank God, I work in PME. I get to spend each day in the classroom with bright, dedicated, motivated, Professionals who are trying to learn everything that they can to improve themselves so that they can better serve others. The military leaders who take our battalions, squadrons, wings, divisions, battle groups to war are products of PME and the better the PME, the better the mission is accomplished with fewer lives lost. We owe them our best. Working in PME is a privilege.

"Ancient" is doing a lot of work here since Taiwan was not conquered by the Qing Empire until the late 17th Century. Both Portuguese and Dutch traders had established settlements there BEFORE China. Earlier dynasties, like the Ming, barely knew Taiwan was there.

🇨🇳FM Wang Yi: #Taiwan has been an integral part of #China since ancient times. It never was, is not, and never will be a country. Any attempt to create “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan” is doomed to fail. Resolving the Taiwan question and realizing the complete reunification of our motherland is a historic process that cannot be stopped. Those who support it are on the right side of history; those who defy it shall perish. fmprc.gov.cn/eng/wjbzhd/202…

One more piece that is increasingly timely given #Iran's strikes and the limits of air #defense we are seeing play out in real time. The most reliable defense against fires is earth. #SouthKorea and #Taiwan embraced this reality long ago. The #US and #Japan should as well. /1

This would require: -Overwhelming air/maritime superiority -Massive amphib lift -Ability to establish, expand, stabilize, and break out of a lodgment -Uninterrupted force flow across the strait -And many other things the PLA cannot provide Xi won't do it because he can't.

Will China use the opportunity to take Taiwan? US diplomatic source tells @thetimes “I think we are all girding our loins wherever we are in the world for what might come next.” thetimes.com/article/6dd61f…

Additional implications given Iran's strikes... below is an old piece I wrote on the risk assumed for families who get stationed in the FIC. If families within Iran's WEZ are at risk, families within China's WEZ are at even greater risk. mca-marines.org/wp-content/upl…

Fntastic writing from @BrianKerg about the pitfalls of rushing to action and throwing "gorilla dust," which is going to be my new favorite term for 2026. "It takes professional courage to tell our own leaders...that the problem would be solved...if time were taken to study it"
Brian Kerg@BrianKerg

My latest in @USNIProceedings: "Gorilla dust can be dazzling to see and satisfying to throw—but it often does little, if any, good... [we must fight] the instinct to take a rash action now that will rarely solve the real problem." usni.org/magazines/proc…

Given the recent hits to US facilities, the below article is particularly prescient. In this month's issue of the #Marine Corps Gazette, Bobby Fowler writes about the potential role of Military Police in providing base #defense against modern threats.

Reality check: The CCP labels any opposition as “provocation.” Narrative control is central to CCP strategy. The CCP wants the world to believe Taiwan’s future is already decided, but it's not. The future of Taiwan must be decided peacefully, and free from the CCP's coercion, threats, or force.

Just finished cruising through this banger on behalf of @USNIProceedings. A full review will appear in a forthcoming issue. BLUF: The Corps' post-WWII survival took more than legislative battles. The decisive action was the Corps' performance in the Korean War.

The essential idea is that the CCP is far more threatened by U.S. attacks on the political status quo than the military balance in and around Taiwan. At the same time, avoiding war with the U.S., even over Taiwan, has remained an essential CCP interest since the first crisis.
