The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) remains one of Hollywood’s greatest post-war masterpieces — a deeply human portrait of soldiers struggling to rebuild their lives after World War II.
The film won 7 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor, and is still regarded as one of the most powerful films ever made about the emotional aftermath of war.
Harold Russell, a real-life war veteran who lost both hands during the war, delivered an unforgettable performance that earned him two Oscars for the same role.

@betboytonyc1 @BuffaloBills I believe he had been on the replacement team before making the regular squad.

Brad Edwards
He was a rough, tough, hard downhill playing and hitting safety.
But....so many times, when a big game sealing interception happened, it was Brad.
My mom had a crush on him too 🤣

Marine PFC George Max Chanak pauses by a row of fallen comrades on Okinawa in May, 1945. George was Killed in Action shortly after this picture was taken. He was only 19 years old.
The Battle of Okinawa, fought from April to June 1945, was the largest and deadliest battle of the Pacific War. More than 180,000 American troops fought to capture the island from entrenched Japanese forces in what became a brutal campaign of artillery fire, cave warfare, kamikaze attacks, and close-quarters combat.
U.S. forces suffered over 49,000 casualties during the battle, including more than 12,000 killed. Japanese military deaths exceeded 100,000, while hundreds of thousands of Okinawan civilians were caught in the fighting. The scale of the losses shocked military planners on both sides.
Many of the American troops fighting on Okinawa were teenagers or in their early twenties. Casualty rates among frontline Marine and Army units were extremely high during the final weeks of the war in the Pacific.
The enormous losses at Okinawa heavily influenced the United States’ decision to use atomic bombs against Japan later in 1945 rather than proceed with a full-scale invasion of the Japanese mainland.
