Balogun gets a straight red for a stepping foul against Bosnia. Automatic one game ban under Article 10.5. No appeal allowed. Every team was told this exact rule at every match coordination meeting since May. Then Belgium is 24 hours from kickoff and suddenly FIFA “suspends” the suspension under Article 27, some obscure clause that lets them freeze a penalty for a year instead of enforcing it. Belgium’s own federation said they were “astonished.” This is only the second time in World Cup history this has happened to a red card. The first was 1962. Funny how Ronaldo got the same treatment before the tournament even started. Different country, same trick. Trump’s out there thanking FIFA for “reversing a great injustice” like this was some grand fairness win. It’s not fairness. It’s FIFA picking who the rules apply to and who gets a pass, and it happens to line up with the two biggest commercial draws left in the bracket. Belgium has every right to be furious. So should everyone else who thought the rulebook meant something.

Belgium wants to cancel its match against the USA because FIFA reversed Balogun’s red card following pressure from Donald Trump. USA decided to pressure FIFA because FIFA referee had refused to give Messi a red card for the same tackle that Balogun made.

🚨⚠️ OFFICIAL: Belgian Federation statement on Folarin Balogun red card case, saying they are “astonished”. “The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) is astonished by FIFA's decision to declare suspended United States player Folarin Balogun eligible to play in the USA–Belgium match on Monday, 6 July at 5:00 p.m. (Seattle time). FIFA bases its decision on Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. This provision states that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee may decide to suspend the enforcement of a previously imposed disciplinary sanction. However, Article 66.4 of the same FIFA Disciplinary Code clearly provides that a red card (sending-off) automatically results in a suspension for the team's next match, as has been the case for all previous red cards issued during this FIFA World Cup. Furthermore, and irrespective of the above, the decision is in direct contradiction with the provisions of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Competition Regulations, as set out in Article 10.5: "If a player or team official is sent off as a result of a direct or indirect red card (second caution), they will automatically be suspended from their team's subsequent match.
