A lot of the anti-DEM gerrymander folks keep saying that the proposed VA congressional map would be the most extreme gerrymander in the country. So let's put that to the test using actual political science. The efficiency gap was the standard developed by political scientists during Rucho v. Common Cause (2019). It's not an entirely perfect measurement, as noted in Keena et al., "Gerrymandering the States," because it would technically rate the 2010s Maryland gerrymander as a fair map, for example (though it does show the 2010s Wisconsin gerrymander as an egregious gerrymander!). Keena et al. argue that the mean/median difference is sometimes a better practice; however, for example, it shows the VA gerrymander as a fair map. My standard for measuring how extreme a gerrymander is, or whether a map is gerrymandered at all, is pretty much one standard or the other, depending on which makes sense. In this case, the efficiency gap is the best standard. Using the 2024 presidential results, we can see in DRA 2020 what the efficiency gap is in the enacted/proposed congressional gerrymanders across the country. The closer to 0, the fairer the map using efficiency gaps. Negative favors DEMs, positive favors GOP. Let's take a look. VA: -24.02% NC: 22.55% MO: 17.65% OH: 15.34% CA: -14.92% IL: -14.60% TX: 14.05% NM: -13.98% FL: 11.79% So yes, the proposed VA DEM gerrymander would be the most extreme gerrymander in the country. In fact, it would be more extreme than the 2010s WI Gerrymander that Rucho was all about, which has a 19-point efficiency gap. Only North Carolina comes close to being an egregious gerrymander.

@Politicsrfun I'm not. I'm saying the bill requires that they call the referendum. They say they don't want the casino. Then they don't approve it and we're done. The end. Why make the Governor do this?

What am I missing? The bill requires that the Board ask for a referendum. So no casino without the Board’s approval. Why are they asking the Governor to override their local land-use authority and veto this bill? Do they not trust themselves? ffxnow.com/2026/03/16/fai…

@Cline4Virginia Hi Congressman, maybe you didn't notice but we're allowing the voters to decide how they are represented. Where were you when other Republican states forced new districts WITHOUT LETTING THEIR VOTERS DECIDE?

We’re here at Lord Botetourt High School to let Virginians know that this gerrymander is unconstitutional and to vote NO early this week by April 21st! We get to decide our representation in rural Virginia, not Richmond!

@_Wraithborne_ Let me state this way then: It wasn't until Heller in 2008 that this “individual” right was actually used to protect a citizen against a gun law.

Dear Virginia, my beloved Virginia.. I figure the people of Virginia have 21 enemies. 21 traitors to the Constitution. Be that as it may, I think we have a larger problem still. Going through the Senate profiles, I see that of the 21 names, only about half were born in Virginia; the rest were from places like Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York. But two names.. they weren’t even born in the United States at all. How would I be received if I moved to Bangladesh and tried to outlaw Cricket.. or the dumping of sewage in the water supply? Salim.. was born in Bangladesh and didn’t touch United States soil until he was 16-17 years old. How would I be viewed if I moved to India and tried to outlaw throwing trash all over the ground or leaving your children to be crushed under the wheels of a 300-ton rolling temple? Srinivasan.. was born in India. Now of course you’ll claim: “But Travis! Are you being racist?!?” And of course I would respond, no, I’m pointing out the irony of moving to a country and then trying to eliminate one of their human rights that their ancestors fought and died for. Wouldn’t these men be welcomed here if they accepted their new home as the gift that it is, instead of trying to harm it? Without their votes, this likely would not have passed… Of course the Senate President, our Lieutenant Governor.. Hasmi.. was also.. born in India.. she would have cast the deciding tiebreaker vote at 19-19. Do YOU want to live in Bangladesh or India? These three definitely did not want to live in Bangladesh or India. They came here, to OUR home. Welcomed as guests, but now they want to slide a knife in our backs as thanks.. Should we tolerate when people move here and truly become American? I think we should. Sure. Because THAT.. is what’s called assimilation. It’s rare, but it does happen.. Should we tolerate when those foreign-born want to move here and begin to destroy our human rights, knowing full well the state of the very countries they once called home? No, I think that cannot be called tolerance, I think that should be considered for what it is.. suicidal empathy.. and becoming slaves to invaders. Will you allow yourself to become a slave to those moving from everywhere else? To give up your human rights that your ancestors died to acquire and preserve? All in the name of tolerance? I do very much hope you won’t. “Sic Semper Tyrannis” isn’t some edgy and cool-sounding Latin phrase our Founders put there. It’s a promise. A creed if you will. A guarantee of what happens when tyrants come around peddling their favorite line “This is for your protection!” or “We’re just trying to help!” The worst atrocities in human history that we now study all began with those famous lines that “This is for your protection!” and were always coupled with disarming the targeted populations. Virginia, stand up, and defend yourselves. Defend what you hope to leave to your children someday. Because your enemies are already within the gates.

@_Wraithborne_ I hope you already know this but if not look into it. For almost the first 200 years of our nation this was considered the collective right not the individual right. And even Heller in 2008, the first time the Supreme Court affirms an individual’s right, allows regulation.

@BryanGrahamVA @Liberty_Xtreme What word follows "well regulated" in the 2A? Militia. That means the militia is to be well regulated. Not the people. Not the arms. If you're going to criticize someone for not understanding an amendment, at least understand what it says.

@Liberty_Xtreme And for you to focus on where these officials were born is a distraction that has nothing to do with this. E.g., Sen. Salim was elected in a Democratic primary where this assault weapons ban was a top issue. He’s just representing what his constituents want.

@Liberty_Xtreme But seriously, the Trump admin ignores due process and you don’t give a shit about the constitution. It’s like you haven’t ever gotten past the 2nd amendment. And gun ownership is to be “well regulated” not an unlimited right. Is there any gun regulation bill you would support?

The race for Delegate Barry Knight’s seat is already in full swing. He hasn’t even been buried yet, and people are maneuvering to replace him. I don’t fault them. Democrat leadership forced this rushed timetable. But I’ll be honest — it doesn’t sit right with me. Barry was my friend. Watching this unfold feels less like honoring a life and more like filling a vacancy. I have a home in the district. I would have to move to run. And I’ve been wrestling with that decision. Not because I don’t want to serve. Anyone who knows me knows I want to be back in the House of Delegates fighting the damage being done to Virginia. I’m conflicted because I haven’t even processed losing my friend. When I ran last year, Barry Knight was my largest supporter. He contributed $200,000 of his own money to help me run. He believed my voice was needed at this moment. That wasn’t political — that was personal conviction. Today, in a Sheetz in Wytheville, a legislative aide walked up to me out of nowhere and said, “We need you back. Please run.” In a place like that, at a moment like this, it felt like more than coincidence. This decision isn’t about ambition. It isn’t about timing. And it certainly isn’t about politics as usual. It’s about whether I’m willing to step up when it matters most. The election is Tuesday from 4–7 PM. Three hours will decide who fills one of the largest shoes in Republican politics. I will make my decision at 5 PM today. This isn’t a game. It’s about slowing the Democrats down and charting a path back to a majority. I’ll let you know where I land before the day is over.

@AssocAnderson @grok When did General Assembly members in Virginia last get a raise? If you adjusted that salary for inflation, what would that look like now?

What’s happening in Richmond right now should make every Virginian angry. Buried in the budget process are amendments to triple the pay of members of the General Assembly — raising salaries from about $17,000 to $45,000–$55,000 per year. Let me be clear: When I served in the General Assembly, I donated 100% of my legislative salary to a Crisis Pregnancy Center. Nobody worth serving alongside is there for a payday. But let’s also be honest about the numbers they don’t advertise. While the base salary is about $17,000, legislators also receive: •$1,000 per month in office expense money — often pocketed, not audited •A Cadillac state health insurance plan •Retirement credit and other state benefits When I calculated the real value of compensation and benefits, it came out to roughly $70,000 per year, even before any proposed raise. So don’t buy the sob story. This isn’t about “fair pay.” It’s about millions of dollars taken out of Virginians’ pockets to line politicians’ pockets — at a time when families are struggling, taxes are high, and services are strained. Tripling legislative pay is disgusting. The public didn’t ask for it. The public doesn’t need it. And the public should revolt against it at the ballot box. Sunlight matters. Accountability matters. And this deserves outrage.
