The West never wanted Col. Gaddafi to leave power — they wanted him dead. In 2011, Gadaffi indicated that he was prepared to discuss stepping aside and handing over power to the African Union if his safety could be guaranteed. The African Union dispatched a High-Level Committee of African heads of state and then African Union Peace and Security Commissioner Moussa Faki to Libya. But NATO enforced a no-fly zone, and the African Union delegation's aircraft was prevented from entering Libyan airspace. They turned thier plane around mid flight. Just imagine it: foreign powers dictating terms to African heads of state, over African skies, during an African crisis. The West knew all too well, that as long as Gadaffi was alive, his dream of a united Africa was still alive. He had to die.
