South Western Railway is to trial metal detectors at certain stations, on days of high profile football matches. Stations that are expected to be included are Southampton, Portsmouth and Eastleigh. BTP will also be in attendance.

@ChimeWhistle @ClarkeMicah @diana_blamires Issue with this is as on Southern the rule book only recognises DOO or working with a guard. If they aren't a safety trained guard the train is DOO and the only person with all the responsibility and training is the driver.

@ClarkeMicah @diana_blamires Sources close to the DfT have told me today that Chiltern has been told to offer the unions a second, non safety critical, person onboard, instead of a guard. There are currently only very informal talks taking place about the method of operation, but no official negotiations.

@strebby1 @mattforde I understand it's factual but you could easily have a system which drew a 30cm band rather than a line and anything inside it was 'too close to call' and decision stayed as given on the pitch. Why not? I think the precision of the line in current system is a bit illusory anyway.

@BuggsUK From what I have been told, the role will be abolished (the fire part) and new roles offered (rehire part) - as opposed to firing someone and rehiring them to do the same job with new T&Cs. As I say, I haven't seen anything in writing, it's just what a high up has told me.

Interesting DM today. I'm told that three rail organisations are plotting behind closed doors with regard to giving serious consideration to introducing fire and rehire policies as part of GBR. It's said that two operators will be the pilot for such a scheme, should it go ahead.

This shocking incident in Huntingdon must surely do away with any barmy idea of Driver Only Operation (DOO) trains. Train guards are absolutely crucial. @RMTunion
