Yep — that’s a recipe for callbacks. For anyone reading: before glue-down LVP on slab, check 3 things: 1) Concrete cure + moisture (RH/Calcium Chloride) per the flooring/adhesive spec 2) Flatness + crack/isolation needs 3) Proper vapor mitigation/primer if moisture is high When cabinets get set on top of a “rushed” floor, it’s the floor that loses. What failures are you seeing most — peaking, gaps, or adhesive release?

@TB1Kinobe And many of them are gluing LVP to uncured concrete, just to get it done so the cabinets can be set. Finish products (my only area of experience) are also being improperly installed.

Nice — the “feather it in” thing is real. If you want it to disappear, make sure they: (1) feather the sanding well past the rough spot, (2) match the *sheen* on the topcoat (satin vs matte is usually the giveaway), and (3) if the color match is finicky, a quick screen + recoat over the whole room often blends everything. Do you know if it’s water-based poly or oil?

Keeping them is the move — 75-year-old hardwood has more personality than half the “new build specials” out there. If that one damaged spot bugs you long-term, a good pro can often do a localized patch + blend (or you can lean into a little patina). What finish is it currently (oil vs water-based), and are you seeing any cupping/gaps seasonally?

@builddirect One spot with mild damage, worn hard the last 12 years (floor was almost completely refinished in ‘14). We’re keeping the floors. House isn’t enough to compete* without character. *for top dollar, it would have sold in 60 days with paint and mulch

Epoxy can look *so* clean in a basement/garage — the make-or-break is always prep. Do you typically do a moisture test (or surface RH test) before coating, and are you grinding vs. shot-blasting for most residential slabs? Curious what you see most often go wrong on DIY epoxy installs.

100% agree. One thing that bites people w/ LVP in basements is slab *flatness* + moisture. Quick add-on checklist: 1) Fix bulk water (grading/gutters/sump/dehumidifier) 2) Do a quick moisture test on the slab 3) Follow the product spec on vapor retarder/underlayment + leave the expansion gap Curious—do you have a “go-to” moisture test method you recommend for homeowners?

Basement flooring must handle potential moisture. Luxury vinyl plank withstands occasional dampness. Engineered hardwood works in dry basements with proper underlayment. Carpet feels comfortable but traps moisture and odors.

So satisfying 😄 Quick pro-tip for anyone DIY’ing LVP: it hates *bumps* more than small gaps—check flatness with a long straightedge and patch/grind high/low spots before you click anything together. Also keep your expansion gap + stagger joints. Curious—was this over a slab or plywood?

Quick pick: LVP or laminate for a busy home? Quick pick: LVP or laminate for a busy home? Rule of thumb: nonstop spills/pets = waterproof LVP. Want warmer underfoot + crisp wood looks = laminate. Both are DIY-friendly—prep the subfloor. Rule of thumb: nonstop spills/pets → waterproof L

100% agree on skipping carpet in basements. If you *are* going LVP/SPC down there, the win is prep: 1) solve water first (gutters/grading/sump) 2) moisture-test the slab + use the right vapor barrier/underlayment 3) choose a waterproof-core SPC with a solid locking system + leave expansion gaps Curious—finished basement or more “utility + storage”?

For a finished basement, think “water + humidity first, aesthetics second.” If it’s on a slab: a good SPC/LVP (thicker wear layer, quality locking system) is usually the safest “wood-look” option. Tile also works great if you don’t mind the harder feel. What I’d avoid: solid hardwood, and budget laminate unless it’s specifically water‑resistant *and* your basement is consistently dry. Do you have any history of dampness/flooding, and is this going over concrete or a raised subfloor?

100%. Basements gonna basement. One add: before ANY flooring, do a quick moisture check on the slab + fix bulk water (grading/gutters/sump/dehumidifier). Then LVP can be a great choice *if* the subfloor is flat and the install calls for a vapor retarder / proper underlayment. What’s the go-to slab test you use on rehabs—plastic sheet or meter?

We can’t afford new flooring for our back garden. I wants a moorish/andalusian vibe so going to clean, prime, paint, and seal the current floor. Question….terracotta or ochre? The wall to the right will be ochre with a trellis and jasmine growing up it. #andalusianvibes

@NobodymrRobert @CreasonJana I question whether this is correct procedure. Is that glue? I’ve never seen any professional installation that uses glue or any sort of bonding agent to secure tongue and groove laminate flooring.
