I think I might subscribe to @thelampmagazine, print and digital. Its polished typography (print and web) is reason enough. Its quixotic list of editorial pet peeves is also reason enough. Its sympathies are not with the chatbot, which endears it to my heart. Every other right-thinking person has likely already figured out what’s just now dawning on me: we should get back to reading print periodicals and developing little cultures around them and waiting for them to come in the mail and writing letters to the editor. The Lamp seems to want to avoid Catholic cliché—Lamp readers don’t all just smoke pipes and talk about Chesterton; Lamp authors don’t submit pieces about Flannery O’Connor—, and it welcomes “amusing, witty, sparkling, delightful light writing and parodies of all sorts.” This all seems just the right kind of antidote to the clankers. Maybe I’ll subscribe only to Catholic periodicals whose titles comprise the definite article plus a single noun.
