NONE OF THESE DESIGNS ARE ACCESSIBLE TO BLIND PEOPLE, who will be forever excluded from their bus service because, being blind, they can’t detect silent and fear fast moving cyclists who typically don’t stop. Routing cyclists through the pavement is madness!

A new design will be taken up by many authorities as it’s cheaper. It is based on the failed (now banned) shared use bus boarder with a wider ‘boarding’ island and zebra crossing. Blind people will still have no idea where they are on the island when they alight.

The guidance was written by cyclists, not access specialists, and shows no care for people who rely on bus services. It claims to enable safe cycling, but without any evidence. In fact the overwhelming number (80%+) of cycling injuries occur at junctions, & not at bus stops.

Yesterday, in the name of road safety, the UK government introduced a floating bus stop design which routes cycles, (including heavy e-bikes and 250kg cargo bikes, often traveling at speeds of up to 20mph), through crowds of bus passengers, many of whom have vulnerabilities. 🧵
