@SmlBizMajority @FTC Employers cannot prevent you from starting a business, they could prevent using industry connections or know how, but you can start a business in a different industry! Let us know if we can help your community
English

If you’re an entrepreneur with a business idea, a noncompete clause from your old employer shouldn’t stop you from starting your own business.
Thanks to @FTC’s new rule banning them, they won’t any longer.

@GeorgeDub100 @primetimesc2 @billsmitha Life is hard! You have to learn that at a young age 😝 on a serious note, having kids start a side hustle will teach them a lot about finance and budgeting! Something they don’t learn in schools!

@primetimesc2 @billsmitha We really shit talking 6 year olds for not starting a business

My 10-year-old son is already an entrepreneur.
He started a valet trash business in our neighborhood.
His business model: For $100 per year, he takes care of customers’ trash twice a week.
One Sunday, he set out with flyers and knocked on 40 doors.
When he came back, we debriefed.
Son: “Man, I knocked on 40 doors and only got one customer. My goal was to get three.”
Me: “Alright, when are you going to follow up?”
Follow up? I could see he looked confused.
Son: “Most people said they weren’t sure or ready to sign up yet.”
Me: “Go see everybody. Keep going back until they tell you ‘no’.”
That’s what he did. And he came back with five more customers.
He got 5x the customers by being consistent and relentless with the follow-up.
Now he has 13 customers and growing, many of them from referrals.
Most people only ask once. They give up too early.
Don’t forget how powerful just following up is.

@girdley I believe it's the best idea to start your business just after college if you want to pursue entrepreneurship. Don't waste your time at small or large corporations. The learning curve is still going to be slower compared to full-time entrepreneurs

I THINK COMMON WISDOM IS WRONG ABOUT THIS.
There is a best way to become an entrepreneur:
Go work for a small company.
I was a cog in many big corporations/machines before I figured this out.
Here’s what I learned..
Before I start:
Don’t listen to influencers who say EVERYONE has to start a business.
There’s nothing wrong with working for big companies.
A lot of years, my lawyer neighbors have made more money than me — with a lot less risk.
Find what’s right for you.
GIRDLEY, AGE 19
My first big company experience: an internship at a big nonprofit in San Antonio.
I spent a summer in a windowless office.
My office mate had Friar Tuck hair.
I didn’t do anything important all summer.
Total cog in the machine.
Everyone there thought entrepreneurs were like aliens.
GIRDLEY, AGE 21
I’m at a luncheon, graduating from my computer science program.
Everyone’s talking about their plans:
“I’m going to work for XYZ Consulting… I’m going into finance in New York…”
When they got to me, I said, “I have no idea.”
I realized my peers were wired to get safe, dependable jobs.
GIRDLEY, 20s-30s
I was a cog in various machines.
The whole time, I was moonlighting different ideas on the side.
Always hustling something.
It made me a total black sheep among my coworkers.
I’d ask them, “hey want to partner on this business idea?”
Blank stares.
I still hadn’t found my people.
GIRDLEY, LATE 30s
Doing some angel investing, I met lots of founders.
If someone had only worked at huge orgs, they usually didn’t understand how things worked.
Customers came from the sales fairy.
Money was something you asked the bosses to provide.
But the experienced small biz folks knew so much more.
GIRDLEY NOW
I’ve started a bunch of companies.
I’m constantly learning from it.
Working with lots of young entrepreneurs, I see them learning and growing through exposure.
Entrepreneurship is a practical field.
—
At a small company it’s different.
You see it all and learn firsthand:
- opportunistic mindset
- relentless speed
- how everybody does a million things at once, instead of being slotted into a tiny niche
- how scrappy leaders solve problems and make decisions
- what they do poorly, and how not to suck
And you’ll meet people who think like you.
—
That’s my theory, anyway!
What do you think?
I’m on a mission to make Twitter a more interesting, positive, helpful place.
If you agree, I’d really appreciate a retweet, like, bookmark, or comment — it’ll help more people see it.
Thanks!
Michael
P.S. A NY Times article highlighted a study about this idea. I'll link to it in the replies below in a bit.
