So to say it has not been consistently applied then you’d need to show some examples from this tournanent. It needs to be clear and obvious too. . The Swiss dive was as blatant as I’ve ever seen

It's mistaken identity because the ref mistakenly identifies who committed the foul. This really isn't hard to understand.

The problem with the new ‘mistaken identity’ rule is that it sets a dangerous precedent. Breel Embolo dived, so if called on the field it’s a second yellow, but that wasn’t the decision. Yet an amendment to IFAB wording before the tournament states: “When the referee shows a yellow or red card but has clearly penalised the wrong player of either team for the offence in question; the offence itself cannot be reviewed except in the context of mistaken identity.” We saw the same with Tim Ream (originally booked for a foul) and Miguel Almiron (eventually booked for diving) in USA vs. Paraguay. In both instances, the right decision was reached when revisiting the incidents. Yet it’s massively open for debate as to whether this is actually ‘mistaken identity’, and that’s the issue. It’s just a mistake by the referees. Both got sold by a dive. They didn’t mix up players. They just made a bad call on a regular foul and wrongly handed out a yellow card. So really it’s just a rule allowing VAR to intervene on more minor on-field calls, and that’s the part a lot of people will feel uneasy about.

Are you dense? Parades was not shown a yellow for simulation, Embolo was. That was not the offense. You can’t claim mistaken identity then re-referee the original offense.

The rule was simply wrongly applied. A referee shouldn’t be able to make up rules on the spot. If the book clearly states that it can only be reviewed for the player’s identity then that’s the only way it can be applied.

So if it’s a tight situation and a handball happened from someone from the other team than the ref called, it would be mistaken identity, but same offence. In Embolo’s case it was wrongly applied.

Player A dives (simulates contact).
* The referee thinks Player B committed a foul and books Player B.
* After review, VAR determines that Player A was actually the one who committed the offence (simulation).

It was not in the referee’s power to send off Embolo there and that is the real issue. If we give referees more power than what’s written in the rulebooks, where does it stop?

This is not true.
There are 16 antennas for the ball signal under the roof.
Also, the 'heartbeat of the ball', was available at all times.
There is a very slight 'wave' which is the ball travelling through the air.
Plus, the cable cam footage doesn't shake or move.

@theoldzealand Paredes was booked, but Paredes was the one who committed the “tackle”. So was there a mistaken identity there? I don’t think so.
By the laws of the game as they are written, the Referee has no right to give a second yellow there even though Embolo dived.

@theoldzealand That exact situation can ONLY happen under the “Mistaken Identity” circumstances for VAR checks.
Embolo dived, it’s clear. However, did VAR see the dive and then notify the on-field referee to review it claiming “Mistake Identity”? If so, wouldn’t that be the wrong use?
