No identity is mistaken. Ref just gets the call wrong. That’s different. So you can argue a wrong call/wrong punishment can and should be changed (those who want more VAR powers do), but it’s setting a re-ref everything type precedent. The referee hasn’t mixed up any identities. He has just been sold by a dive.

@Aaron_Decatur Brother.... These people don't wanna hear it... He's clearly mistaken who committed a foul and booked the wrong person and yes simulation is a foul

@Aaron_Decatur “If the referee penalises an offence but has clearly misidentified the player who committed that offence, only the identity of the offender can be reviewed.” THAT offence, not any other thing the ref missed. Is it too hard to understand?

@Aaron_Decatur Because the player dove so dramatically. The player who dove caused the situation. When playing on a yellow.

@Aaron_Decatur Ok then every yellow card must be checked now. Mistaken identity. Did he think embolo is paredes? No way!

@Aaron_Decatur Except that is not what mistaken identity is. It doesn't check the foul, only if a correct player got booked, not some random player on the same team. VAR messed it up.

@Aaron_Decatur He’s a very biased journalist. Don’t know why I followed him for that long.

@Aaron_Decatur I think the ‘mistaken identity’ is he thought one player made the contact, so gave a yellow, it turns out the other player made the contact, ref mistakingly attributed the initiation of contact to the wrong player, and it’s a yellow if you kick a player then dive to buy a foul.

@Aaron_Decatur So it was Embolo who made the tackle and Paredes who simulated? The ref did not mistake any identity. The red made the wrong call. Happens 100 times each game. And yes, it was a clear dive and yellow would have been the right on-field decision

@Aaron_Decatur But it’s not a foul if it‘s simulation, they’re two different offences. He’s correctly identified who’s committed the ‘foul’ even if we think no foul has taken place. VAR shouldn’t pass comment on whether the ‘foul’ awarded is actually a foul.

@Aaron_Decatur But they are different fouls. That’s part of the problem. Just because one doesn’t rise to yellow doesn’t mean the other is required to. They should be judged separately.
