Wyoming County Woman Charged in Attempted Armed Robbery at Alum Creek Shell Station ALUM CREEK, W.Va. (May 1, 2026) — A 42-year-old woman from Oceana, Wyoming County, is facing multiple charges after she allegedly fired shots inside a Lincoln County Shell gas station during an attempted armed robbery early Friday morning. According to authorities, the incident occurred just before 4 a.m. on May 1, 2026, at the Shell station on Little Coal River Road in Alum Creek. Rebecca Peterson entered the store armed with a firearm, approached the counter, and announced her intention to commit a robbery. On surveillance video, she identified herself by name and repeatedly instructed the clerk to tell the owner it was a robbery. One shot was fired, striking a wall. The clerk told Peterson the owner was in the back counting money. Peterson then walked toward the rear of the store, realized no one was there, and fired another round at a surveillance camera in the back area. The clerk escaped the store and called 911. Peterson fled the scene in a black SUV, traveling northbound on U.S. 119. She was stopped a short time later in neighboring Kanawha County and taken into custody. A firearm believed to have been used in the incident was recovered. No injuries were reported. Peterson is charged with attempted armed robbery, wanton endangerment, brandishing, assault, and destruction of property. She was awaiting arraignment in magistrate court Friday and was being held at the Western Regional Jail.
