If you are only willing to give grace to the deserving, you don’t know grace. Grace by definition is meant for the undeserving.

In Arden-Arcade, a Sacramento suburb, the full stack of YIMBY reforms help to turn a mall parking lot into 174 homes: AB 2097 allowed the mall to carve off parking, SDBL granted a 20% bonus, and HAA guaranteed entitlements. h/t @dovkadin

@sanfilti @short_the_pump @UziCryptoo You seem to have glitched again. I, like the OP, am not talking about nebulous “savings.” I am talking about the percentage of one’s total income one ends up paying in all types of state/local taxes.

6 years of living in Texas and I've come to the conclusion that the no state income tax thing is basically a scam. The property taxes are so high that they negate any savings. We are still paying as many taxes in Texas as we would in California. You save on gas I guess.

@Clint_Davey1 When you don’t control the land or have direct rule, it’s called a hegemony. Internationally we have been a hegemony, not an empire.

America is two empires. One is a land empire that was conquered by rifle-armed settlers in the 19th century. The other is an oceanic/diplomatic empire built by the US Navy and the State Department in the 20th century. Isolationist sentiment comes from the type of people who built the former. Internationalist sentiment comes from the type of people who built the latter.

@ZaidJilani My grandfather donated to Sinn Fein for decades and was IRISH. After he died and Ancestry.com came along, we found out we were actually relocated Scotts, were only in Ireland for about a century, and married only fellow Scotch-Irish Presbyterians while in Ireland lol.

Of course some Americans will vote based on policy towards other countries — especially in diaspora communities. It’s not inherently wrong, but don’t deny it exists while doing it!

Alan Dershowitz spent his life complaining about the “dual loyalty” trope but then he says he will vote for Republicans not because of any disagreement on American policy but because they support Israel more?

NIMBYism has a price tag, and working people are paying it. CA is pricing out its middle. Californians leaving the state carry more debt and lower credit scores than the neighbors they leave behind. New research shows 7yrs after moving out, they're 11% more likely to own a home. sfchronicle.com/california/art…

@sanfilti @short_the_pump @UziCryptoo Basically CA’s Prop 13 & NIMBYism is why CA can compete with TX on overall taxation for high earners. It’s why most of the people who move to TX from CA are poor/middle income: they just want to own a home. Coastal CA is endless home appreciation and 2 tacos for property taxes

@BriannaWu This is true, but it’s also why the whole issue is Iran, just as it was when Clinton pretended otherwise in the 1990s. Iran is the money & motivation, without which all other views don’t matter. Which is why leveling Gaza was evil and pointless. None of it ends until Iran changes

I used to be exactly like this. It’s so easy to live in America and advocate a two state solution. But at some point, we have to grapple with the fact Palestinians don’t want a state. They want to eradicate Israel. These are not peace loving people. You can watch videos all day long of children being inculcated into wanting death and violence against Jews. It’s why a majority of them still support Hamas and also support the terrorist attacks of October 7th. I know it’s easier in polite liberal circles to not see that, but it is true.
Jill Filipovic@JillFilipovic

btw I am not "anti-Israel." I'm not an "anti-Zionist," depending on how we're defining the word Zionist (I am like many normie liberals against the settlements, the occupation, and the brutalization of Palestinians, but supportive of a democratic Jewish state). I am a boring-ass two state solution person who thinks both Israelis and Palestinians would be best served by each group coexisting in side-by-side countries. Palestinians are incredibly ill-served by the murderous tyrants of Hamas (to put it very mildly). But if you think Israel is being well-served by its current government... then yeah we very much disagree.

@short_the_pump @UziCryptoo Dear short pump, He stated there were no savings between Texas and California. If I buy a house in Texas and a house in California, same size, amenities and model, which one is going to cost more money? There is your savings.

Everybody does this type of thing. We also only keep having new all-time box office champs because film reporters refuse to adjust old films for inflation, while in reality Gone With the Wind has always just been the biggest box office money-maker.

This is a very strange NYT op-ed. It starts out by lamenting that many entry-level cars are $25-30K today. Then it gets nostalgic about cars in the 1960s costing 1/3 of median family income 1/3 of median family income today (2024) is over $35,000! nytimes.com/interactive/20…

@StephieTheLefty @_fat_ugly_rat_ The only analogues for Southern CA on earth are the Mediterranean coastal areas, the south coast of South Africa, and maybe one or two more.

@StephieTheLefty @_fat_ugly_rat_ Also, the analyses is based on total comfortable days, not a possible max high. Although you can get extreme summer (esp September) heat the farther inland you get, the total days without any extreme cold/heat/ice/snow/humidity is far lower than anywhere else in the USA.
