The Divine Spark
Within each of us lies the divine spark. The good, the evil, the ugly, the beautiful, we all carry this connection to God, and when we sense this divine spark in another, the door to love is opened. We see the love God placed within another that resonates with our own soul, like sparkles on the waves of a lake. The error we sometimes make is to believe that this sparkle is permanent and not a momentary flash, and we become trapped.
To trap a monkey, and no, I am not calling anyone a monkey. You take a small neck gourd, cut off the top, then tie it to a tree and bait it with something shiny. When the monkey sees the shiny item, it reaches in it's hand to grasp the shiny object but can not remove his hand that is clasped around the item. He keeps his hand clasped because he can't stand to give up the pretty object that is so beautiful to him, but if he let it go, he would free himself from the trap. This is what happens often to mankind when we see the divine spark we call love.
So if we are trapped not wishing to let go of the tiny piece of God, we've captured what happens? It turns into lust. Not the sexual lust that is attributed to the word today, but the lust of the soul which can desire people, things, events, anything that can be desired. I'm reminded of a Buddhist teaching that, in my understanding, is that lust creates the desire to possess, which in turn creates the capacity for violence. Once you have the item, jealousy and selfishness make sure no one takes it, even if it means violence to keep it.
Love, on the other hand, is selfless in nature. It cares more for the welfare of that which is loved than the self. When the spark is first felt, it is love, when grasped, it becomes lust.
Is it possible for love to last a lifetime? Of course, mankind has the ability to feel any emotion at any time, and this is what love is, an emotion.
Have you ever had a day that you were just angry? Just as you have the ability to create anger out of thin air, you have the ability to create love the same way. By simply remembering what it felt like when you first felt that spark you can recreate love as your emotion anytime you wish, just like when you remember an incident that made you angry, you get angry all over again. The choice is all yours.
Does this smooth out our existence? It can, but it needs lots of practice. So remember that moment that connected you to God, that tiny moment, and replay it as often as you can. Someday, if you find that loving emotion has become easy to put on, you might just be able to see the sparks rippling everywhere and in everyone.
