Although I don't hate these people, it does irk me when people put their feet, particularly shoes, up on seating in public transit, especially with cloth seats. It might be a little more acceptable because there is transverse seating, which is slightly more "personal" in a way.

@RichardDRembert We need to further subsidize Amtrak, it is a public service owned and operated by the government, so why is it pretty much the only thing that needs to be for-profit? Why aren't highways expected to make a profit? There apart of public infrastructure?

@BlueOctober27 @spazzrella @even_steven8tht Well, I don't like to point fingers, but public transit is not a thing most Republicans like, and this was in 2011 when a state-run HSR was proposed for Florida but rejected by Rick Scott. In 2018, Brightline opened privately and has shown increasing ridership yearly.

@spazzrella @BlueOctober27 @even_steven8tht Record ridership numbers just mean the highest amount of passengers they have transported. In 2021, 159,474 riders, than in 2022 it was 1,230,494, and now in 2025 it's 3,116,323. Record ridership doesn't mean they hit their project numbers; it just means better than previous.

@BlueOctober27 @CAMovingForward @even_steven8tht How are they record ridership numbers when they were still 50% below the growth they had predicted and used to obtain bonds against. Yes they were higher year over year, but the growth had tapered off.

@BlueOctober27 @spazzrella @even_steven8tht Yes, it is very interesting. The reason they don't talk about ridership numbers is that they don't care. All they see is costs, and when costs look high, then it looks bad. When they see "new record ridership," that doesn't mean anything to them, as they don't understand trains.

@BlueOctober27 @even_steven8tht I think it's more about not knowing that ridership is good than a refusal to acknowledge it. Highways are more appreciated, even if they're over budget, because everybody owns a car. But when they see a train over budget, they think, "Nobody uses trains anyway, so it's a waste."

@CAMovingForward @even_steven8tht Trains and Highways are both highly utilized and come in over budget every time. Brightline has record ridership, some people refuse to acknowledge that, why do you think that is?

@jsin215 @bryanrbeal I couldn't find anything that cheap, but maybe that's just my location/browser. Either way, my main point isn't about actual costs; it's that Brightline does make money and even with their prices, people are still willing to use trains, contrary to what the original post stated.

@CAMovingForward @bryanrbeal I can fly round-trip to Orlando for $153 on Wednesday, the cheapest 1 one way to nyc is $79 with the majority of trains being over $100. If you've got 3 people it's cheaper to uber

@adelshep @thegirlchlo_ No, I mean you are right in a sense, it is technically a "private corporation" not a government agency, it's just that the private corporation is 100% controlled by the government, and they also own 100% of the stocks. I was thinking more like private, as in no Gov affiliation.

@logandockery @thegirlchlo_ That's their killer. If you look at their ridership numbers, they have actually been performing better year after year, and their profit would actually be good if they didn't have so much debt from the initial building costs. It's really a shame the government won't fund transit.

@CAMovingForward @thegirlchlo_ The operation itself is profitable. The problem with Brightline is they also had to build the infrastructure. Private companies in other countries operate on government owned tracks. The federal government should be building the initial infrastructure.

@jsin215 @bryanrbeal At times it can be expensive. Acela tickets are around $60 to $250 and flights to Orlando, at the cheapest, are $180. My point was that the guy above said nobody wants to take trains, but even at these prices, Amtrak & Brightline every year are breaking record ridership numbers.

@CAMovingForward @bryanrbeal Amtrak gets $50 per ride in tax subsidies. At times it cost more to go from Philly to nyc on the acela than it does to fly to orlando

@PhillyGov Looks like that station could use some platform screen doors, with how crowded it's getting. Doesn't look very safe for people standing on the edge.

@dcadamb The podcast was nice! Though it would be great if you added section timings (chapters) for each topic you talk about.

@Natcromancer Singapore is filled with stroads and it is really car-centric, and recently, they have actually been removing street-level crossings so that traffic can flow better. They make underpasses with stores in them, or use existing underground malls to get more people into shops.

@nivak86 @Natcromancer That's part of how car-centric it is; those crossings, like in Orchard, used to exist, but they got rid of them, so traffic could flow better, and now people have to go into those underground malls. This leads more people to stores and clears up streets for traffic.

@Natcromancer have to disagree with you on that, you don’t see what’s happening under the roads, there are crazy underpass linkages that span 2-3 kilometres so that commuters can avoid the sun in the afternoons. Orchard is super underground, so is raffles city and raffles place.

@alanthefisher If Amtrak could turn this into actual HSR, like remove grade crossing, and bring some Avelia Liberties. I think that this might actually do well.
