Some recent collab work exploring how phase transitions in movement persistence can lead to a statistical gain in sperm search efficiency🔥 #ReproRocks #ComplexSystems #ActiveMatter mdpi.com/1099-4300/27/5…

Now out in @PLOSCompBiol 🎉 We used multiagent models to explore how search for an egg emerges as a statistical property of sperm variation and used Bayes theorem to quantify selection. A single sperm wanders.. Many sperm compute🔥 #ReproRocks #Complexity youtube.com/shorts/H7RXWfA…

How does aging reshape a tissue that must continually rebuild itself hundreds of times? Using spatial transcriptomics, we find that ovarian aging disrupts the coordination of cells across space and time before reproductive cycles stop. #OvarianAging

"I ended up with the project that nobody wanted to do." 🧪 Dr. David Pepin discusses how a "failed" postdoc led him to MGH and a technical challenge that paved the way for his Roger V. Short Medal-winning research. A must-watch for trainees!

If people want the deeper background behind my critique of pancomputationalism, here are 10 books that shaped my thinking. None is "the answer" by itself, but each helped me break the spell of the machine metaphor in biology. Many of them are available online, DM if not!/1 😉
Robert Ziman@robziman

@amahury0 CCat: what are the best books and resources, in your opinion, for getting started with the technical details on this and all the related subjects you write about?

Employing a minimal but biochemically relevant model of trigger waves, researchers obtained an analytic expression for wave ignition thresholds in #CellSignaling in 1D and numerical solutions in 2D and 3D. Check out the study: go.aps.org/4bULRj1

@amahury0 We're pretty steeped in digital computing. Is the emphasis on symbolic representation influenced by that? Do other representations fit in? Analog for instance? Is the goal to answer: What is the 'right' set of characteristics imputed from technology to describe biology?

So, for the umpteenth time, pancomputationalism is not a suitable way to describe life. I'll soon be writing a full essay in which I explain each of the points discussed in this thread in detail, but for now I've provided enough references for skeptics to consult. Stay tuned!/12

New publication from our group. We examine the primary functional consequences of mtDNA mutations across major organ systems. Spoiler: the cumulative mutational burden broadly phenocopies a complex I deficiency. cell.com/iscience/fullt…

Using intravital imaging in mice + drug-inducible contraction, we found the vas deferens operates as a flow-regulated valve system. Luminal sperm flow is not just an output, but it feeds back to open the lumen (valve), remodel tissue geometry, and stabilize the sperm transport.

Let me announce the other preprint uploaded last week: “Flow-driven lumen remodeling and valve opening in the vas deferens” biorxiv.org/content/10.648… This work tackles a fundamental question: how does a reproductive duct dynamically control its lumen shape during sperm transport?
