🧵THREAD 🧵 In Their Own Words: California Democrats say they oppose gerrymandering. Now they’re lining up behind Gov. Newsom’s scheme to gut independent redistricting. Let’s rewind the tape. 🎥👇

“When the governor leaves office, he will be leaving the next governor ongoing structural deficits from 2028 on— the next governor and the rest of we Californians. I don’t think that’s a very good legacy,” — @CASenReps budget Vice Chair @RogerNiello on @GavinNewsom #CaBudget #MayRevise

California's Gas Tax Is More Than Double the National Average! The average state gas tax is 33 cents a gallon. California's is 71 cents! Add cap and tax, the Low Carbon Fuel Standard and the boutique blend and government policy adds over a dollar to every gallon. The President is pushing to suspend the federal gas tax to give families real relief. Newsom won't even consider a state gas tax holiday. Californians are paying for his priorities! #FixCalifornia foxla.com/news/how-much-…

He Had One Excuse for Every Question. Eight years of warnings ignored. Free healthcare for illegal immigrants. $130 billion on a train to nowhere. Gas taxes strangling California families. The LAO tells a very different story than Newsom does. Now he wants credit for a balanced budget built on assumptions he has not earned yet. #FixCalifornia

This budget is Newsom's Last Chance to Do Right by Californians. On Monday we sent him our budget priorities. Fully fund Prop 36. Prevent wildfires. Save distressed hospitals. Stop the fraud. Pay off the unemployment debt every other state already paid. None of this is radical. But if a program is not something he supports personally he pushes it aside in favor of headline grabbing pet projects and his nonprofit grift machine. The question is whether he will finally listen to what Californians actually need or spend his last budget the same way he spent the first seven. #FixCalifornia

My thoughts on the May Revision. There's truth in advertising. I'm waiting for the Legislative Analyst’s Office to release their data because it's based on facts & fiscal reality. The governor’s numbers are as unreliable as the high-speed rail project, and I’m skeptical until I see the LAO’s analysis, given his history of living in Fantasyland. #caleg @CASenReps

California Just Received Its Last Drop of Middle Eastern Oil. Nothing else is en route. California sits on over 1 billion barrels in proved oil reserves and produces about 250,000 barrels a day. Our refineries can handle 1.4 million. Instead 60 percent comes from foreign imports because decades of policy decisions made it impossible to produce our own. This crisis was not inevitable. It was chosen. #FixCalifornia wsj.com/business/energ…

Oh no…not my bill, SB 347, which Senate Democrats killed, now being implemented.

NEW: In his “May Revision” budget presentation on Thursday, California Gov. @GavinNewsom @CAgovernor will announce a plan to cut taxes for new businesses in California, according to information provided exclusively to us by Newsom’s office. Specifically, Newsom will propose cutting California’s first-year LLC filing tax in half for new businesses. Under the plan, new LLCs, LPs, and LLPs would pay $400 instead of $800 in their first year from 2027-2029. The governor’s office says the move would help roughly 250,000 new businesses annually and lower startup costs for entrepreneurs. The plan will need to receive the approval of at least a majority of the legislature.

Honored to work with Connor Lopez’s mom, Allison Lyman, who lost her son last year when he was hit by a driver while on his motorcycle. Connor was a caring musician from Galt, and I am working to make sure people found guilty of vehicular manslaughter are held accountable. 1/2

We’re always looking for opportunities to make CA more affordable both for families and farmers. My Senate Bill 353 does just that by extending the 15% tax credit that encourages California farmers to donate fresh fruits 🍎 🍌 vegetables 🥕 🌽 dairy 🥛 eggs 🥚

A must-read from @DanCalmatters CA Dems blew through $165B they never had, used gimmicks to hide it, and left taxpayers with a massive deficit. Their fix? Higher taxes and blaming Trump. Democratic legislators weigh new taxes and blame Trump for California's deficit calmatters.org/commentary/202…

To ensure accountability & transparency, my legislation - Senate Bill 985, the Fix 911 Act - would require Ca's Office of Emergency Services to provide quarterly legislative oversight with the NextGen 911 project. Later this week, we should know whether or not my commonsense bill will head to the Senate floor for a vote. Thanks @sacbee_news for keeping this issue in the spotlight. #caleg via @sacbee_news

During COVID, Newsom shut down businesses. EDD lost billions to fraud. Now, Newsom is making them pick up the tab for his failure to pay back the federal unemployment insurance debt. CA is the only state in the nation that hasn’t paid its balance. I’m proud to coauthor Senate Joint Resolution 15 to call on Congress to help protect our workers & job creators from paying for Sacramento’s mistakes. #caleg @CASenReps

Even when the Iran conflict ends and the Strait of Hormuz fully reopens, California will still remain vulnerable. Why? Because we now import roughly 75% of the oil we consume. That means future conflicts, refinery fires, supply disruptions, or even major weather events can send prices soaring again. We built an energy system with almost no margin for error — and working families are paying for it every day at the pump.

Nearly 10 percent of $114 billion in unemployment benefits went to fraudulent claims in 2020. California's own EDD confirmed it and did nothing. Now businesses that survived shutdowns and kept employees on payroll are being hit with escalating federal tax penalties. Enough is enough. #FixCalifornia
