They peg BTC as collateral, then hand verification to a small group of signers. Citrea's answer was different: ZK proofs and BitVM, so Bitcoin verifies the state directly. The model requires only one honest participant among signers, operators, watchtowers, and challengers. To break it, you'd have to break Bitcoin. Founders Fund made this their first-ever Bitcoin ecosystem investment. Not at the peak of Bitcoin L2 hype. At its lowest point. Joey Krug called it "the strongest team and technical architecture in the space." The team responded by doing what most L2s didn't: shipping mainnet before the TGE, with 40+ live apps from day one. The question we raised then still stands: technical differentiation alone doesn't retain users. Token launches can be inflection points or they can reveal whether the fundamentals hold. Depends what you mean by similar. Both tokens are separate from BTC, not backed by it. Hemi token is the native gas token of their system afaiu. On Citrea gas is paid in cBTC. Things like ecosystem incentives and governance are probably similar. Im not following hemi but probably they also incentivizing LPs and onchain activity through the token.

General-purpose is dead. Though Mega enabled cool, low-latency products, their targeted users re just not enough anymore. I had high hopes for $mega and can’t believe last year’s most hyped launch is going straight to zero. Teams should focus on building in niches.
