@CarnegieMEC @CAmmoun We keep putting water, farming, and governance in separate policy boxes. The Litani basin shows they are one living system. When that system fractures, the land stops supporting people and movement becomes the only option left.

An extraordinarily important challenge to local communities & agriculture in many countries, that can only be understood as the intersection of systemic crises in governance, public finances & credit markets, & conflict. By my colleague Camille Ammoun: carnegieendowment.org/middle-east/di…

In Diwan, @CAmmoun examines how a conjunction of factors has affected rural migration in the area of Lebanon's Lake Qaraoun, the country's largest water reservoir. Whole sordid story here—noting that the bridge in the photo is normally submerged: carnegieendowment.org/middle-east/di…

@SultanAlQassemi According to Blanche's daughter, an article in "The New York Times" dated July 20, 1939, refers to it, but the photograph and headline appear in the Beirut francophone daily "Le Jour" .

@CAmmoun thank you Camille. This is great. May I ask what the source of the title is? Was it from her notes or the family archive? Just so we note it down.

Lebanese friends. I am told that this painting by Blanche Daoud Ammoun (1912-2011) represented the Phoenicians. Could any of you suggest whom these characters are and what is the significance of the god in the background?

At a time when #Lebanon is facing ongoing war and uncertainty, maintaining accessible and shared public spaces remains both a challenge and a necessity. In this context, the Sioufi Garden remains open and actively used by the community. 🌳Last month, @ESDU_AUB, @DawaerNGO, and our Institute met with representatives from KfW Development Bank and @UNOPS and briefed them on the Garden’s functioning and activities. IFI’s Project Coordinator Ghinwa El Khatib presented the management and operational framework of the Garden that it is developing with stakeholders, which will be reflected in a Municipal-Community Action Plan that can be piloted for other public gardens as well. 🌲The Sioufi Garden Project focuses on advancing inclusive and sustainable public space governance in Beirut. Through participatory approaches, local capacity strengthening, and evidence-based urban research, we aim to strengthen Sioufi Garden’s role as a vibrant and accessible community space. Be sure to follow this space for more updates on our activities. This activity is part of SiMA grants component, funded by the German Government through KfW Development Bank and implemented by UNOPS.

The IFI-PPIA Fellowship Program is pleased to welcome and introduce its second fellow, Chloe Nasr, as part of the Spring 2026 Cohort. Her project explores how Lebanese Arabic hip-hop artists explore Beirut’s contested urban realities and aims to inform urban policy and city planning that acknowledge everyday realities and foster more inclusive, sustainable, and equitable urban futures. Nasr will be working under the mentorship of IFI Associate Fellow @CAmmoun. #FellowshipProgram
