Toronto Police just ran a 3am internal operation at 22 Division based on a tip officers were drinking on duty. Now, officers drinking on duty is something I've been privy to. The same nearly cost me my life. However, Professional Standards allegedly searched officers’ private belongings without consent, denied at least one officer union representation, and targeted 22 officers. Result? Nothing found. Breath tests clean. The union is now calling it an egregious violation of Charter rights and demanding the removal of the Superintendent in charge. This comes right after the Project South corruption scandal. I'm not defending the search, nor am I defending the Associations stance that searches and investigations like this are not justified. I don't know enough about the 'tip' that lead to this decision. And sometimes actions like this are not only warranted, but necessary. I am highlighting that this what 'institutional panic' looks like. Overreach, poor judgment, and treating every single cop, even the good ones, like suspects. Toronto Police Department are in severe panic mode, because of what it still about to be disclosed. You cannot rebuild public trust by breaking internal trust.
