The elephant skull is a marvel of evolutionary engineering, designed to solve a specific physical problem: how to support a massive head, heavy tusks, and a muscular trunk without crushing the animal's neck.  Its structure is defined by three unique features: pneumatized bone (a honeycomb interior), a high nasal opening, and deeply embedded tusk sockets. 1. The "Honeycomb" Interior (Pneumatized Bone) If an elephant's skull were solid bone, it would be too heavy for the animal to lift. To solve this, the skull consists of two layers of hard compact bone separated by a massive network of air-filled cavities called diploe.  • Structure: This looks like a honeycomb or a sponge. Thin bony plates separate millions of small air cells.  • Function: It dramatically reduces weight while maintaining structural strength (similar to corrugated cardboard or bird bones).  • Size: This expanded surface area provides a massive anchor point for the thick neck muscles required to leverage the head up and support the trunk.  2. The Nasal Cavity (The "Cyclops" Appearance) When looking at a bare elephant skull, many people are surprised by the location of the nasal opening. • High Placement: The nasal aperture (bony opening for the nose) is located very high on the forehead, between the eyes. • Mythology: This large, central hole likely inspired the myth of the Cyclops. Ancient Greeks finding elephant skulls may have mistaken the central nasal cavity for a single giant eye socket. • Trunk Attachment: The soft tissue of the trunk attaches here, running down over the face, but the bony anchor is high up to allow for leverage and muscle attachment. 3. Tusk and Tooth Architecture The jaw and face are structured entirely around the elephant's unique dentition. • Tusk Sockets (Alveoli): Tusks are modified upper incisors, not canines. They are deeply rooted; roughly 1/3 of the tusk is hidden inside the skull. The sockets extend up as far as the eye socket, distributing the immense force generated when an elephant uses its tusks to pry trees or dig.  • The Conveyor Belt Jaw: The maxilla (upper jaw) and mandible (lower jaw) are designed for "molar progression." Elephants do not have all their teeth at once. As the front molar wears down, a new one moves forward from the back of the jaw to replace it.

I will savor this picture for a long time. I know Tanja, Ivo's wife, was both worried and proud. Ivo showed enormous heart. Congrats to Phil Gore. 114 Yards. He could have made 500 miles.

WE ARE STILL HERE... BUT ONLY JUST. This post isn’t easy to write. But we need to be real with you all. Right now, our small charity is under immense pressure. Every day, our phones don’t stop ringing ,emergency services, domestic violence teams, police, and individuals in desperate need are reaching out to us for help. Not because they want to, but because we’ve become their only hope. This past week, we’ve dealt with one of the most extreme safeguarding cases we’ve ever seen. A dog, trapped in the middle of an unthinkable situation ,we got them out and safe. But the reality is... that was just one of many. Dogs are coming into our care DAILY.
We’re being contacted from all over the UK.
Yet, we receive NO FUNDING from the services relying on us. We’ve had to urgently bring on new team members at the sanctuary just to keep up and more dogs are on their way. Every life we take in costs the charity, and our vet bills are growing by the day. It’s terrifying. We know we’ve been quiet on socials, but that’s not because we don’t care. It’s because we are drowning in cases and trying to keep up. We're helping a client with severe trauma through rehabilitation ,she’s doing amazing, but therapy costs money. We’re attending endless meetings with her with housing, medical, welfare.
We’re trying to plan fundraising ,but we barely have time to breathe. We are a small charity with big hearts, and we stand for the dogs who can’t speak up for themselves. We don’t walk away from the hard cases we walk into them. This is where we need YOU. Whether it’s £1, £5, £10, or £100, every single donation makes a difference. We’re fighting for these dogs, and we’re fighting for the people who love them but are trapped in situations they never chose. Please, if you can help, donate, share, or even just comment to boost this post. We need all the love and strength right now. Thank you to everyone who continues to stand with us ,we see you, and we are so, so grateful. When we go quiet, it’s not silence — it’s survival. 🧡 dogsonthestreets.org/donate-new/ #DogsInNeed #SanctuarySupport #CharityInCrisis #AnimalRescueUK #SupportLocalCharity #BehindTheScenes #DomesticViolenceSupport #EveryDogMatters

For the past 45 years Britain has been on a mission - to rid itself of as much affordable housing as it possibly can without replacing it. And in that mission we have been extraordinarily successful. The Spending Review is a massive moment for the housing crisis. Here’s why 🧵

It’s been 49 days since I last saw a drop of rain. Today it’s decided to give it all back in one go. This the UK we all know and love… 15 miles ticked off today, originally had 20 planned but seriously overestimated the hills and terrain. Still on path to finish Wednesday next week, just an extra 5 miles to split over the next few days. Got some very exciting news to share tomorrow. Not one for interviews but this is an opportunity I cannot turn down! (Should add the time today includes 45 minutes looking round the football stadium) Day: 53 Day KM: 24KM (15 miles) Total KM: 1217.6 (737.6 miles) Total money raised for @mindcharity: £48,492 gofund.me/37d41d7b

Today was for you dad. Day 28 completed of trying to become the youngest to run the entire length of the UK. 20 miles ticked off today from just before Wigan to Preston. Really tough with the heat and mentally trying to get back into running today but really grateful to do it and keep the average KM pace at 8 minutes. By this week, we will officially be into Scotland. In a weird way it’s gone so quick, obviously there’s all of Scotland to push through but doesn’t seem nearly a month since we began. Mental health matters. Day: 28 Day KM: 32 (20 miles) Total KM: 645 (408.1 miles) Total money raised for @mindcharity: £31,640 gofund.me/37d41d7b
