Alonso reached Leverkusen and saw that his squad lacked proper fullbacks & instead had wingbacks like Frimpong & Grimaldo + no real wingers, mostly half space players like Wirtz, Hoffman & Tella so he figured out they will be better off with à 343 to maximise the players at hand. That’s creative solution. It similar to Tuchel who played with a back 3 at Chelsea to maximise the squad but does not identify as a back 3 manager. At Real Madrid Alonso has proper fullbacks and proper wingers & saw no need to use 343. He used mostly 4231 or 433. At Chelsea we have proper fullbacks & proper wingers, there is no need to solve any problem with by switching to a back 3.

I think the direction of travel now is you get Alonso and embrace a more regular back 3. An attack of Doku, Haaland, Marmoush, Cherki, Semenyo did nothing outside one moment of brilliance. Grab a top RCB to partner Colwill and beef up the midfield and attack.

I know the Chelsea board will try and use Alonso to compensate the fans , very unlikely that we qualify for Europe , I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not but hopefully we get good players , Alonso gets his philosophy across and we start the season well . After all ,the last time we won the league was with a 3 back coach and in that season we didn’t play in Europe

If Joe Shields leaves Chelsea , we will automatically improve by 50%. I can guarantee you that he is the major reason why everything looks messed up. Exactly how he destroyed Southampton for his personal gain and got them relegated. There is a reason ManCity pushed him out.
