I have repeatedly asked for baselining and impact assessments, to the point that I am pretty sure that every time I stand up to ask a politician a question a lot of people know it will be one of the above. This piece goes to the heart of those concerns.

COMMENT Post-CAP farming policies for England “lack scientific rigour" Policies must be based on sound science, not hope and wishful thinking, or we may find ourselves sleepwalking from one food crisis to the next, warns NFU President Minette Batters. scienceforsustainableagriculture.com/minettebatters

It was a great experience to join this group of 3 scientists from NOAA, Johns Hopkins, ⁦@ucdavis⁩ that was facilitated by @aaas to discuss methane and how it's covered with journalists. I recommend watching the presentation and Q&A. | SciLine sciline.org/climate/methan…

The annual Groceries Code Adjudicator survey is open! @UKGCA wants suppliers (yes, we think that includes farmers!) to tell the GCA about any Code issues they are facing and whether retailers are treating them fairly and lawfully. Take the survey here... gov.uk/government/new…

Greatly looking forward to hearing from @nvonwestenholz and Rohit Kaushish from @NFUtweets this afternoon when they talk trade - from carbon to countries. And we might just ask about this bit of news...👇🏼

I think @JanetHughes should be congratulated. DEFRA's future support for farming will not make everybody happy, it never would. I've never known a DEFRA official continually engage in a positive open manner with farmers & genuinely listen to ideas & opinion, so hat's off to her

@oxmartinschool OK will read but for sake of conclusion, when Prof Allen says ruminants: "...can draw down carbon from the atmosphere and induce global cooling. That will create the same effect on global temperatures" this isn't through increasing soil carbon?

@CFG_Farmers On the first, yes, a policy brief from Climate Pollutants (here) states 'falling methane emissions would lead to lower global temperatures'. On sequestration from ruminant grazing, we refer back to Grazed and Confused which does not conclude positively. oxfordmartin.ox.ac.uk/downloads/repo…

@oxmartinschool Yes, that's our point in our report. If you let CH4 dissipate naturally while reducing total CH4 emitted through greater livestock efficiency - but importantly, while also continuing to utilise ruminant-related biological processes to sequester carbon, then the job's a good 'un.

@CFG_Farmers Prof Allen's work relates to allowing methane to dissipate (as it naturally does in ~12 years) without replacing/increasing it. Herd sizes or methane output do need to be reducing to achieve that. It has been compared to sequestration as both lead to less GHGs in the atmosphere.

@CFG_Farmers Hello CFG, I'm afraid that's not us. The key report on this topic says "at an aggregate level the emissions generated by these grazing systems still outweigh the removals". Our research doesn't show ruminant agriculture as a route to sequestration. oxfordmartin.ox.ac.uk/downloads/repo…
