The Jeremy Robbin's book is fascinating, thank you for recommending it. The paintings in the Zurbarán exhibition are incredible but the lighting in the gallery is appalling. Everyone seemed to be bobbing their heads to see the paintings through the reflective glare. One of the worst lit art shows I have ever seen.

Just back from London and Jeremy Robbins’ Zurbaran book waiting. Looking forward to this. Also the Zurbaran exhibition catalogue is excellent 💙

@fugitiveink Duggan's novels are great. It's worth hunting down some first editions if you're able to, some of them have fantastic covers by the master of linocut Edward Bawden.

I have recently made the thrilling discovery that Alfred Duggan's novels are as good as everyone* says they are. *actually not many people, but clearly people worth hearing

They're all great, but have you seen 'Age of Kings'? The BBC production of the eight history plays, over 15 episodes that were screened live(!) on the BBC in 1960. It was released on dvd a few years ago and is very much worth hunting down. Not least because it has Sean Connery as Hotspur.

The must-watch productions of the BBC Television Shakespeare: The "Henry IV" plays, "Henry V" (David Gwillim) "Othello" (Anthony Hopkins) "Measure for Measure" (Kate Nelligan) "Much Ado About Nothing" (Robert Lindsay) "The Merchant of Venice" (Warren Mitchell) #ShakespeareDay

Shakespeare pro-tip: The DVD complete Shakespeare Collection from the BBC, filmed in the 70s and 80s. Many libraries still have them. You may need a region-free player if you buy it, but it’s worth it if you’re serious--especially if you don’t live in a theatre town.

35 years ago I met my wife in one of the more dilapidated Victorian era buildings used as Law courts in London. On seeing a woman hanging out of a small window shouting for help, I ran up two flights of stairs and kicked in the rickety oak door of the toilet in which she was trapped. She rewarded me by buying me a cake which we ate sitting in Trafalgar Square. Do young people not get up to such shenanigans these days?

@RockettLord I feel like this question should be limited to people 35 & younger. Answers from people who have been married for over 20 years are not going to be particularly helpful or useful to you.

@nguyenhdi My old professor insisted that if I wished him to supervise my phd on Dickens, then I must refrain from watching any film or tv adaptations of the novels because they would pollute my mind.

One problem with screen adaptations is that you get a mental image of a character because of various actors only to return to the book & realise the character is much younger. Heathcliff is only 19 when Cathy dies. Mr Collins is only 25.

I remember watching an interview with Clint on the set of Absolute Power, possibly Film '96, where the discussion (and hype) was that he was making a film in which his character dies. Obviously there were lots of changes by the time the film was released, and perhaps the Absolute Power we got was not the film he originally intended.

Absolute Power (1997). Sometimes a film has nearly all the right ingredients - great premise, top screenwriter, fantastic cast - but the 'cake' fails to rise. This could have been a memorable dark political action thriller, but Eastwood's jewel thief is turned into superman.

England will be 1100 years old next summer. Still time to commission a massive bronze of Athelstan. We can put it on the fourth plinth of Trafalgar Square, thus sparing ourselves many more decades of rotating modernist nonsense.

The memorial being equestrian isn't the problem, its declinist lack of ambition is. The US is building a huge arch for its 250th birthday, we're building a modest statue for world history's longest-serving woman ruler. It should be a 70m-tall architectural monument in Green Park.

20) Anyway, wish me luck! Again, I’m not trying to criticise the medical staff! I have no doubt they’re working as hard as they can. But if they’re under-resourced, they can’t perform miracles. If the government’s brought down waiting times, it’s not noticeable. *Thread Ends*

As a kid I lived in a bungalow in a quiet cul-de-sac near Great Yarmouth that Eric had previously stayed in during summer season shows at one of the town’s piers. After his second heart attack in 1979 I sent him a get well soon letter, and I was ecstatic when he replied and said that he remembered the bungalow. It had a small glass conservatory in the back garden in which he would set up a telescope. After shows he would relax observing stars and planets in the vast night skies of Norfolk.
