Missouri Dept of Transportation (MODOT) maintains a database of road closures related to flash floods. This dataset has been augmented by combining precipitation and streamflow data, with road vulnerabilities, preparing it for training road-closure prediction models. #AMS2026

Anticipating where and when thunderstorms will develop is a forecasting challenge. A storm's first lightning flash can be identified from a space-based lightning sensor, so the origins of thunderstorms can be better studied and forecasted. #AMS2026

Measuring snow isn't easy. We rely on dedicated volunteers to measure snow daily with a ruler. We use these measurements to verify snow forecasting tools. To use them properly, we must understand how often snow is measured on time and how often rounding happens. #AMS2026

CIWRO scientist David Harrison has developed a suite of lightning prediction tools based on the new Rapid Refresh Forecast System. These tools help Storm Prediction Center forecasters predict when and where lightning will occur up to 60 hours in advance of a storm. #AMS2026

To improve ice accumulation estimates, we developed an algorithm that ingests direct measurements of ice accumulation at airports (ASOS stations) to bias the current freezing rain national analysis (FRANA). This new algorithm fills in missing parts of ice storms. #AMS2026

Freezing rain creates dangerous ice on roads & power lines. We found that forecaster-written weather reports add helpful details missing from freezing rain sensors but are inconsistent. Clearer, more standardized reports would better support research & forecasts. #AMS2026

High-resolution instrumentation observed the passage of a tornadic QLCS from Norman, OK on 26 Feb 2023, noting a rapid change in near-storm environment. Analysis has been conducted to determine what impacted the rapid change, with two thermodynamic processes highlighted. #AMS2026
