New Year, new term! As I took the oath of office for my second term as Council Member for District 14 in the Bronx, I couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible body of work we have been able to accomplish in our first two short years.

NYC is facing overlapping crises of affordability, housing instability, public safety + public health, and I'm encouraged to see several meaningful investments reflected in the Mayor’s Executive Budget proposal. I look forward to digging into the details in the weeks ahead. 👇👇

Respectfully, @GovKathyHochul, CityFHEPs presently houses MORE New Yorkers than shelter, at a fraction of the cost. The path to a balanced NYC budget is moving MORE families into permanent homes—not continuing to warehouse them in shelters that traumatize and destabilize people.

.@GovKathyHochul comes down hard on CityFHEPS growth: “We’re trying very hard to get them focused on a program that is growing 4% a month..It is unsustainable.” “When we see budgets that are blowing up like a hockey stick..they need to make some decisions.”

Since the Council passed these laws, more than 💫 42,000 evictions have taken place—an estimated 25,000 of which could have been prevented 💫—while thousands remain in shelter, unable to access a permanent home.

New Yorkers deserve stable, dignified housing—and CityFHEPS is one of the most effective tools we have to deliver that. Today I was joined by dozens of advocates, affected tenants, and NYC Council colleagues to call for CityFHEPS expansion.

Proud to stand with my colleagues today to call on the Mayor to expand CityFHEPS, the voucher program helping people experiencing homelessness find permanent housing. CityFHEPS helps people stay in their homes and saves the city a LOT of money compared to shelters.

We rallied today for the 25,000 families whose evictions could’ve been prevented. The CityFHEPS lawsuit must be resolved to protect the most vulnerable New Yorkers.

Today, we joined the Homes Can’t Wait Coalition to call for the expansion of the CityFHEPS program. This program has been a lifeline for so many tenants. With evictions at an all time high, it is imperative that full expansion of the CityFHEPS program is included in the budget.

Expanding CityFHEPS vouchers is key to ensuring that struggling families have access to safe, stable housing. Proud to support @CMPiSanchez this morning in demanding that City Hall drop the lawsuit and come to the table with an offer.

“NYC is in a deep affordability crisis & every additional home unlocked matters. This effort will bring experts together in a new format to allow NYC to consider legislative reforms and design efficiencies that maintain safety while expanding opportunities to build.”@CMPiSanchez
Speaker Julie Menin@SpeakerMenin

Today, I announced that our @NYCCouncil is advancing a proactive housing agenda to make it easier to build more homes across the five boroughs. Our proposed updates to the City’s Construction Codes could help unlock up to 35,000 new homes on small lots. We've also created a new Council Advisory Group on Housing Affordability that will help shape long-term solutions.

NYC is in a generational housing crisis — with nearly 3,000 empty or underbuilt lots sitting idle. Today, @SpeakerMenin proposed Construction Code reforms to unlock up to 35,000 new homes, backed by a new Advisory Group on Housing Affordability to shape the Council's housing agenda.

“This is a crime,” CM Sandy Nurse says of deed theft. “What these people are doing is criminal. This is a class of criminals. This is white collar, and they are not being treated the way they should be.” Says NYPD too often sides with deed thieves.
