Steve Jobs believed CARE is the only thing that separates great products from forgettable ones. "There's a lot of ways to be as a person and some people express their deep appreciation in different ways. But one of the ways that I believe people express their appreciation to the rest of humanity is to make something wonderful and put it out there." Steve wasn't being romantic here. He was describing the mechanics of how great work gets made. Most founders think their edge is capital, connections, or raw talent. But according to Jobs, the real dividing line was whether you actually cared enough to refuse mediocrity. He had zero patience for what he called "third rate products... very pedestrian... McDonald's" products with "no spirit to them." Notice he didn't say: "products made by third rate teams" or "products with third rate resources." He said third rate products. Full stop. Because the quality of the output only ever reflects the quality of the care that went into it. You can throw unlimited money at a problem. You can hire the smartest people in the room. But if you don't genuinely care and are not willing to sweat the details that everyone else ignores, the work will always feel hollow. "No spirit to them." That's what happens when you optimize for speed or profit instead of care.
