@JeffYates6 But there are more of us than the litterlouts, so it works out - 4million visitors to our waterways every fortnight!

@CRTPeter "If everyone who visits one of our canals or rivers picks up just one piece of plastic, they’d be clear within a year." #PlasticsChallenge This does seem to be, at best, unrealistic.

@JeffYates6 Hi Jeff, we already spend £1.2m on bin emptying, litter picking and fly tip clearance, plus our fab volunteers give over 125,000 hours (outside of pandemics) to litter work!

@CRTPeter Fully on board with your aspirational #PlasticsChallenge but would suggest that as long as a % of the population remain as thick as mince, it has obvious limitations. Alongside the 'Challenge', surely re-directed investment is required in canal bin capacity or emptying?

🔉 Sound on. Wherever you are today, find a moment of calm and listen to the gentle sounds of water lapping and birds singing at the canal. #LifesBetterByWater

I have, could you? Those causing plastic litter on our waterways are in a minority - if everyone else picks up even one piece of litter each time we visit our local waterways, the towpaths would be litter-free, meaning less plastic in the water and so less washing out to sea.
Canal & River Trust@CanalRiverTrust

Each year an estimated 14 million pieces of #plastic rubbish end up in and around our canals and rivers, with around 500,000 pieces flowing out into our oceans. Help protect our waterways by pledging your support today 👉 canalrivertrust.org.uk/news-and-views… #PlasticsChallenge
