After a busy couple of years, our team of volunteers will be taking a break until autumn 2022. While there is still a lot of work to be done to develop a safer and more equitable restaurant industry, it is time for us to take a break to catch our breath and recharge. 🧵1/3

Every restaurant worker deserves to be paid fairly, provided with a safe workplace and treated with respect and dignity. It is going to take time but keep believing that it is possible and worth fighting for. 3/3

@DaManDaLegen It depends. Some are tipping higher knowing that restaurant workers have been struggling. We're also hearing people complain about tipping because they don't have a lot of money to spend. Still lots of discrimination. Here's a report on tipping trends: cdn.dal.ca/content/dam/da…

@CRWC8 I’d be curious. I was always an average tipper. But I have found since COVid, I have been leaving well above average tips for restaurant workers. Wondering… are others doing the same?

Promotions are great, but I think an important way to get people back into restaurants, bars and coffee shops in large numbers is to make them safe. By treating sars as the infectious-aerosol-borne disease that it is, we can do that. Governments can help.

We've been quiet about covid cases skyrocketing. It's not that it isn't important, we just feel defeated. The same issues keep arising and our governments have left us to fend for ourselves. 2 years in and we still need paid sick days, access to testing and improved ventilation

If you were asked to build a list of qualities an employer needs to be considered "one of the good ones", what would you include?

Have you tried negotiating a contract with your employer? With restaurants in high demand for labour, restaurant workers have more power to negotiate better work conditions. A few ideas: ▪️Pay rate ▪️Max weekly hours for those on salary ▪️Set days off ▪️Overtime rate

A reminder for restaurant workers to keep track of their hours worked and check their pay stubs to make sure they are being paid for all of their time working. 👉Some shady employers love to readjust start and end times to make sure that they are meeting their labour cost targets

@beth_hamilton1 That’s amazing (and good work to you for being so determined to fix things)! There’s definitely some great customers still out there who recognize we’re all human and just trying our best. Sometimes that’s all that we need.

Anyone else noticing customers have unattainably high expectations lately? We're still living in a pandemic. We're still short staffed. We're still having supply chain issues. We still have substandard work conditions.
