I wanted to check how I felt about the Yankees after April last year as a reality check because they were 18-13 and in first place come May 1st.
But when I went through old texts, I was down on them from the jump last year. I was talking about the rotation being shallow, the Devin problem and the quality of baseball being just as sloppy as 2024.
I pulled every 'bad play' and error from April of last year to compare and... yeah they have definitely played a better brand of baseball defense this season.

Enjoy how well the Yankees are playing right now.
There will inevitably be a three week period at some point this season where they look like they forgot how to play baseball. It’s part of a long season and happens to most good teams.
But we know how good this team can really be. And with reinforcements on the way, they might get even better.

So basically, in 3 szns Volpe was:
• Brought up early to finish development in majors bc the Yankees refused to sign any other option
• Played year 2 & struggled
• Played year 3 & struggled while injured
• Sent down (likely) in year 4 after losing job coming back from injury

Based on expectations, track record and $42 mil salary, gotta say Bichette has been the most disappointing Met. Plenty of candidates but Bichette was supposed to be RISP savant. Delivered once tonight but failed in 7th, then 10th-inning DP was Mets last gasp. Hitting .194 w/RISP.

@JonFromMaspeth Doesn’t have the SLG for OF or 3B. He’s only a MLB IF if he can play SS well and hit enough.

Here’s a solution to the Volpe dilemma.
Can he play the OF or 3B??
Usually a lot of SS’s in high school and the minors move onto other defensive positions. If you’re athletic enough to play SS, then you should be athletic enough to play every other position.

@GinaMuscato got a gold glove that first year and 2nd in voting the next year. Timing and position are everything. Yanks see the position they are in, No need and front office has been quick to make moves. He will be up, just not yet. Now some fans want to do that to Lombard? At age 20? nah.

@GinaMuscato The biggest fact that everyone misses is..the launch factor BS.
If they let him play to his strength, gap power to RCF, he’d probably hit 15 homers with a ton of double and a livable BA. We saw that in the minors and on occasion in the majors. Not everyone need to hit 30 HRs

People say Canadian healthcare is not free, because we pay taxes for it.

Aaron Boone was asked if the Yankees' plan to have Anthony Volpe be their starting shortstop when he returns from injury has changed: "We'll see. We'll continue to talk about that. Again, José's played himself into and earned himself more playing time. I love the idea of José being in that kind of super-utility role because he's so good at it. But you also can't ignore that he's played so well defensively at shortstop, been a real spark for us offensively, especially after kind of getting off to a slow start probably the first 10 days, two weeks of the season. He's really picked that up and been in the middle of us winning games. At the end of the day, we're going to try and do what's best for our team and then individual players that we care about too and know that are going to be important contributors to our team. We weigh all that."

I wonder if the #Yankees would send Volpe down today just to call him back up on Friday when they’re on the road to make it seem like they did something.
I honestly think it would be a mistake to bring him back on this homestand. With the way the team is playing there’s really no positive that can come from this. You’ll only turn the fans further against him.
Today is going to be a very interesting day.

Anthony Volpe's rehab clock runs through the weekend. At that point, the #Yankees will have two choices:
1. Activate their starting shortstop of 3 years
2. Option him to the minors
The latter would be a drastic departure from the way the club has handled Volpe in the past. But with the clock ticking and José Caballero clicking, the choice, at the very least, exists.
