On Mother’s Day I know it’s traditional to post the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary punching the Devil, but this year I hope people don’t forget about the cool manuscript illumination where she has an angel babysit Jesus while she wrestles a demon and makes him cry “uncle”.

Why does Mary look younger than Jesus in Michelangelo's Pietà? The answer is one of the most beautiful in art history... Mary is holding the body of her 33 year old son, but she looks 20. Critics noticed it the moment the sculpture was unveiled in 1499. The mother of a man who has just been crucified would have been in her late forties or early fifties. Michelangelo had carved her as a girl. His own biographer, Ascanio Condivi, was the one who finally asked him why. The answer Michelangelo gave is preserved in Condivi's Life of Michelangelo and has been repeated for centuries: "Do you not know that chaste women stay fresh much more than those who are not chaste? How much more in the case of the Virgin, who had never experienced the least lascivious desire that might change her body?" Most modern critics treat this answer as a half-serious deflection. Michelangelo was famous for his sharp tongue and refused to explain himself to people he considered beneath his intellect. The deeper answer is older, and it lies inside one of the greatest poems ever written. In the final canto of Dante's Paradiso, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux begins his prayer to the Virgin with one of the most extraordinary lines in Italian literature: "Vergine madre, figlia del tuo figlio." "Virgin mother, daughter of your own son." Michelangelo, who knew Dante by heart, was carving that line into stone. Mary is younger than Jesus because Jesus is older than the universe... because she gave birth to her own creator. But there is another reading, simpler than either of those, and it is the one I find myself thinking of today. Every mother who has held her child has held them at every age at once. The infant is still inside the toddler. The toddler is still inside the teenager. The young man on her lap, even dead, is also the boy she nursed and the baby she first carried home. And maybe that's why Michelangelo did not carve Mary as the years had aged her. He carved her as love had kept her: outside of time, outside of grief, holding her son the way she had always held him... I finished praying my masses for the day and then Dad and I visited mom’s grave and cleaned it up. On the way out of the graveyard, dad and I were touched at how many people were at the there. There were even families with chairs and picnic baskets sitting at graves. On the way out, I saw a solitary man standing at a new grave. Dad and I prayed for him. Maybe you could join me and asking God to heal his broken heart.

We will not allow a "MAiD Team" into our Hospice. BC NDP expected that we would let in the "Team" to do the k*lling, as we just looked away. We refused - so they took our funding and Hospice away. They emphasized "Conscience Rights" is only for a person. We would like the right to a "MAiD-Free Zone" and a Sanctuary for the Living as a choice for British Columbians. We will build it! 😃

@terrynewman The lack of guardrails in abortion is the basis for maid and the dismantling of its guardrails.

Canada has no criminal law restricting abortion at any gestational age since the 1988 Supreme Court ruling (R. v. Morgentaler) struck down the previous restrictions. Abortion is treated as a regular medical procedure, publicly funded under the Canada Health Act. Most countries allow abortion but impose gestational limits, especially for elective cases. Late-term (typically 20+ or 24+ weeks) is heavily restricted or only permitted for health/life threats or severe fetal issues.

Here's the typical argument flow that happens on the left re: late term abortions in Canada. - Late term abortions aren't happening (at all). - If they are happening, they're rare. - Not only are they rare if they're happening, but they're only happening to save the life of the mother or because she was raped.

@terrynewman Presumably from the saline washes that are meant to burn the baby through ingestion. These little bodies are expelled through labor. It is grotesque.

Babies born alive and left to die following late-term abortions in 2025... *cells with value counts of 1 to 4 are suppressed (dumb) so numbers could actually be higher.

@terrynewman I expect that no nurse or doctor holds them until they die. The probability is that they are left alone in a basin to die. It is inhumane.

The argument against having restrictions against late-term abortions in Canada are always: they aren't happening and what's aborted isn't a person yet. Well... if this is accurate, there goes both of those arguments.

@clharrington024 That’s such a lovely message and reminds me of the night I went to say goodnight to my nine year old son, who I found with Half Blood Prince face down on his duvet, and who said to me solemnly, ‘why did you kill Dumbledore?’

My 6th grade daughter is reading Harry Potter, she finished the 6th book very late the other night so I was already asleep. I awoke to a post it on the kitchen counter: “Mom, Dumbledore died! I’m so sad. Love, Charlotte” This small note made my heart explode. Reading great books is magical and moving and heartbreaking. Thanks @jk_rowling for writing this world for kids to love and live in. Parents, too many kids today haven’t read all the Harry Potter books. Start reading this series with them. I promise it will be one of your most cherished memories.

I would love to find a priest I feel comfortable talking to for my first confession. All the priests in my local area are from overseas and I don’t feel comfortable talking to them about my personal life or really deep stuff. Does anyone have any advice?
