@Noahpinion If "you" are right, what's the workable playbook? One could be forgiven for thinking that the actual problem has to be SOMEWHERE in your advocacy if you want politicians to be doing anything to address it.

Policymakers never act on risks until something similar to that risk has actually happened. If you go around screaming "AI WILL BECOME A GOD AND TURN THE WORLD INTO DATA CENTERS AND SOLAR PANELS", politicians will just tune you out, even if you're right.
Noah Smith 🐇🇺🇸🇺🇦🇹🇼@Noahpinion

Two groups of people have been extraordinarily bad for the AI safety discourse: 1. Lefties like Emily Bender who dismiss AI as a useless toy 2. Doomers like Yudkowsky who force the discussion to only focus on superintelligence

@sixgunronin1 @HistoryBoomer It’s actually a pretty bad great filter candidate, given it’s at least as likely to create detectable markers of spacefaring civilization as the biological civilization it replaces.

@HistoryBoomer Its the Great Filter of the Fermi Paradox. If we dont screw up it will open the universe to us. If we are still a bunch of dumb apes who just found a bic lighter, it will burn everything to the ground

@So8res Seems relevant that, in the second tale, the “you” in question happened to be the president of the United States. The lesson does not necessarily generalize across all possible “yous”

The moral of the first tale is that warning shots alone don't save you. The moral of the second tale is that you don't need to wait for exactly the right disaster to do something you think needs doing. You just need to prepare well, and wait for an excuse.

A tale of two warning shots, #1: COVID happened. Scientists are divided on whether it was a lab leak. The world did not rally against dangerous viral research in labs. The warning shot was squandered.

@gmiller @TheZvi @elonmusk My (not confident) guess is that you’re being fully earnest here, but I like this more as a joke (i.e. a dig at Elon’s nonsense about Amanda Askell not having kids).

@TheZvi @elonmusk I honestly can't understand how any parent who loves their kids can think that they're living in a simulation.

WHICH AI IS THE BEST GAMES PLAYER?! Google are launching their “AI Game Arena” today, which pits all the major LLMs (Gemini, ChatGPT, Grok etc) against each other at heads up NL holdem, chess and Werewolf. This is a big deal, fellow gamer nerds... (1/n)

@ilex_ulmus @TheZvi Seems like a good response to me. Some genuine disagreement here but he’s not on some wildly different page. Seems like “bad now” is no longer warranted given the highlighted admission of the vibes being off in the post you were reacting to.

So @TheZvi is just bad now. If you were ever listening to him to learn about AI Safety then forget about him— he’s too enchanted with a recursively self-improving agent! The kind that could make dangerous, unaligned, out-of-control, ever more powerful superintelligence!

@Noahpinion Intelligence improves an entity's ability both to access a wider variety of options and assess the expected value of the options to which it has access. In some contexts, accessible peaceful behaviors have higher EVs than non-peaceful behaviors. In others, the reverse is true.

@FadedMemester @Halalcoholism (I think the post implicitly asks us to consider something more like the median effectiveness, or archetypal version of each of these groups though)

@FadedMemester @Halalcoholism If we get to pick the highest effectiveness versions of those two, Samurai become in coversation for the single best pick and Janissaries become clearly better than grenadiers or prussians.

@Halalcoholism This might be the best pick, but you have failed to describe a winning battle plan. Mongols are the only group out of the bottom 5 that testudo would be particularly effective against, and it is principally an offensive formation anyway.

@ASFleischman While this is a useful mindset, it seems myopic for two reasons: 1) this sort of life, while great on many metrics, diverges from the life we evolved for in a variety of potentially important ways, and 2) a life being in the top 1% historically does not ipso facto make it "good"

@christianjbdev The title literally includes the two categories that unicorns (not real) and dinosaurs (not living) fit into. Very clearly not implying they are in the same category (though of course there are plenty of categories you could devise that fit both).

Unicorns and dinosaurs are not part of the same category, unless you're a young earth creationist. Or a Guardian columnist I guess.

Today the NYT taught me voters don't act in their interests and the more homophobic, transphobic and misogynist and racist you are, the more votes you can expect from LGBTQ people, Black and Brown people and women. A Sadism party could really sweep up next election.

@d08890 I’m generally inclined to agree but I assume at least some of these people have a conception of consciousness that has more qualifiers than mere qualia, or are making a point about concepts that get wrapped up in the word that don’t actually follow from the existence of qualia.

@Heccles94 "All cultures are equally valid" directly contradicts "let's stand united". Many, even most, cultures are directly opposed to many types of unity, so imploring people to stand united is imploring some people to act in opposition to their cultures and adopt aspects of yours.

This is vile, gross and despicable racism. It has no place in the UK. All cultures and all peoples have the same image right to walk this earth. All cultures are as valid as the next. Lets stand united. The Tories can keep their vile division. RT if you agree.

@lastpositivist Seems good to me if for no other reason than to defang the racism in dnd discourse. Seems fairly liberating to be able to have consequential differences between fantasy races/species without worrying about making people feel icky due to a linguistic resemblance to racism.

Huh I didn't know this was a thing. The mouthfeel of "species" seems a bit too scientific for a high fantasy setting? I guess people will just grow up with this and it'll never seem unusual to them tbf.
Jack, Lost Lore Scholar@LostLoreScholar

I do enjoy the 'why are you complaining about a change that doesn't matter' argument. If it doesn't matter, why make the change? The comments of my video on changing Race to Species are full of it. #TTRPGs #TTRPG #DungeonsAndDragons #OSR #5e #DnD
